Alright so this is my grow, pics are of yesterday, the sativas you see are about 27" tall with the indicas ranging 15-22. They veged 2 weeks and are now 5 weeks old.

As I am a newb I made some mistakes. As you can see I have a lot of plants in a 35 gallon tub with about 3inches of dirt/perlite

So is rootbound a real issue cause they seem ok for now?

As for my second question I pre add my nutients to my distilled water and I'm a freak and have to smell everything every time I use it, it smells like ass. Do the nutrients give bacteria something to thrive on? It developed this smell in a few days

And finally I have 24 23watt fluoros under there, are my sativas looking stretchy or do they look good? Should they have more bud on em by now

you need to get that light closer do you keep it at that height all the time or was it for the pics

before harvest you flush your girls out with distilled water to get all the buildup from the neuts off them. This helps the weed taste less harsh. Looks like you can bring the lights down a bit too. I Wouldnt have them so close together but everything looks good from here. good grow bro.

You will need to transplant them so they will survive through flowering.

The smell you are smelling. Is that a mildewy type smell? Also if any of your sitting water has light hitting it it will grow algae and smell weird.

Light was up for the pics. But about my questions?....
Yea I've heard the flushing thing, should you have runoff each time you water..I've never watered till I saw runoff

No its not mildewy, I have noticed distilled water gets mildwey real fast. Its more of an egg smell. How should I go about that? They are all in same containor..

Can I shave some leaves and add dirt to turn stem to root?

grorite is right, need to keep CFL/fluorescent light really close (2-6 inch`s) to get good strong light ..

about transplanting, do as I did once in flowering:

cut the bottom off and put it in another pot full of fresh soil ..

Stupid question... The bucket has holes four to five 1/2" holes for each plant ? Gotta drain...
Other than that looking good, I would not worry about root bound...
Area in cubic gallons [35] ? Divided by how many plants ? = soil for each plant...
so if you have 10 plants 3.5 gallons each?
Good Luck man....

Plants look good for now, but I wouldn't expect them to get much bigger if that's all the soil you have under them.
As far as odor from your nutes, if you're using something with kelp, that's what smells like ass.

Lol you confused the shit out of me bro. The tub itself is a 35 gallon tub with roughly 16quarts, 2gallons? Of dirt and I have 14 in there. Holes 1/2in for each plant? I'm not sure what your saying...

You sir are a genious ill put it in another tub.

Haha the lights were up for the pics ya'll I keep the lights about a half in from the plants I have em on y connectors to socket adaptor and they are pluggeed into extension cords so the lights actually are mainly on the sides. The v shape of the y fits over the main cola or tops. They get a lot of light... Well the sativas do.

I have roughly 10,000 lumens per square foot. I just asked if they were stretchy cause I've never really seen sativas

my 2¢

the light is fine....could get it closer but theres no real need to be honest. i have experimented with both keeping CFL at a distance and keeping them right close to the plants and i have found that right close to the plants cause heat stress....again my 2¢

no real need to transplant them, just cull the males (if any) out of the tote and keep on doing what your doing.

as far as flushing goes its controvesial, i dont think it does anything but startve the plants and make them look like shit after a week. i say keep feeding and you dont have to worry about starving them because you flushed too early, sativa dom's are difficult to judge flowering time and they could go 10-14 weeks. would be pretty stupid to flush on week 9 and have them want t o go 14 weeks right?

your plants are all super established in that tote at this point and transplanting is possible but not the best choice, again my 2¢. by seperating all them roots your likely to stress them pretty badly and will take 1-2 weeks or more for them to recover depending on how badly you damage the root system.

lol thanks a lot, well about the fluorescent light, I use T5HOs (6x49Watt 5ft. as I got em for free at work ;) in total 27,900 Lumens) with brand new philips bulbs 4x6500k and 2x2700k I use for Veg.

and I did test em with my "cheap" light meter

DSC01049.jpgDSC01050.jpg

dont provide much light really but do pretty good for Veg. atleast, did`t notice any heat stress from keeping my plants 2-4 inch`s away, but I also run a fan and a 6" ventilation and even after 20 hrs of burning I can touch the bulbs, no problem, only time I experience any problem is when they actually grew in to the bulb, then I got a slight burn, but nothing seriously, I notice they grow a lot faster if I keep em with in 2-4" compared to etc. 10" and according to my light meter they also provide about twice as much light at 2" then at 8" but to keep em from growing in to the light I found 4" to be the right distance, atleast for me and my light, give my plant room for growth, but its a daily "work" to keep em with in 2-4"

Ooh yea my 600W HPS

DSC00820.jpg

like 7x the amount of light a ft. away then the fluorescent 2" away !!! no wonder HPS rules in flowering ..

Yea bro this was some mexi bagseed I got, I actually have 27 plants total going, only 5 were indicas , well hybrids or so mostly indica. Sativas are so unruly I'm gonna be 4 weeks into flowering soon and they still grow an inch a day, my indicas are struggling to keep up and get light.. Next grow ill do pots so I can raise/lower the individual plant....

Anyway, so is it safe to use them nutes? It didn't stink at first, after a few days it smells like sour milk..

And I guess ill ask another. I grow in mostly perlite and occasionally some of the top perlite turns yellow is that ok? I don't overwater but because of my medium and the amount of it, I water once a day sometimes I mist em a bit too

Hey man thanks for the info. Since you have a light meter... I've always heard lights are rated at 1 foot away. So do hps or cfls actually put out more than advertised if your closer than that distance..
+1 on mcguyver dude, you got any other neat tricks I woulda never thought of

Figured I would throw up a pic of how I keep my lights.
They are literally a half in or closer to each bulb. I have to bend leave down and such every hour to keep them from touching the bulbs.
The bulbs are cool to the touch but if my plants touch em for more than 10 min the leaf will turn brown where it touched

I'm gonna be upgrading with my tax money, its a pain to have to keep the lights so close.

Whoops how did that second pic get there, its a few week old pic showing partially double serrated leaves, every plant has double serrated leaves hmmm?

I belive my 600W is rated at 90K Lumens, my light meter show in foot candles, but its about right, also have to calculate for Lumen loose over time as the bulb get older, but my light meter show about 7-8K ft. candles a ft. away

here are some more pictures, also found out that Maylor is way superior to flat white:
