A lot of questions...

Hi everybody,
I am brand new to riu, and a brand new grower.Some of you may have already seen some of my threads on my first plant that I made quite a few mistakes on and I am still trying to see if I can save it. Already transplanted it but I still don't think it's doing that great. I also have 6 seedlings I started that I hope to do better with.So anyway, I had a few questions that I was hoping somebody could help me out with. It would be greatly appreciated... If I am using CFL's, how many watts and/or lumens do i need for seedlings,veg and flower? When do I transplant the seedlings? And should they go into a 1 gal. first and then a 5 later? and how long should I wait after tranplanting before topping and/or going to 12/12? ANY advice would be greatly appreciated.
1 more thing. on the plant I messed up on I transplanted it into a 3 1/2 gallon bucket. Should 3 cups of water every 3 days be enough? That was one of my mistakes I WAY overwaterd it....CAM00320.jpgCAM00316.jpg

Yea.. that plant don't look so hot, were you picking leaves off of it or did they fall off?
Overwatering is one of the biggest ways new growers kill plants. You want the soil to be moist, but not wet. Let it dry between waterings, so the roots can get oxygen, too.
As for your vague questions, each strain is different and variables are to be considered.
The longer you grow, the more you learn how to read your plants.
Be patient, and do some reading while you let your plants do their thing.

A: When the roots outgrow whatever size container they are in.

Q: And should they go into a 1 gal. first and then a 5 later?
A: Yes. Going to a 5 first, then to a 1 would be silly.

Q: and how long should I wait after tranplanting before topping and/or going to 12/12?
A: As long as you like. Generally, transplanting is strenuous to plants, so give them at least a couple days to recover. But you can let them go for as long as you perfer.

When should you water your plants ? When the soil gets dry....stick your finger down into the soil to see if it is still moist underneath...I dig in a little past my first knuckle I would say....Different plants drink h20 at different rates so there is no "X" amount every "X" days....

Hey jimmy I understand your heart you have been a stoner since the 70's and your just trying to figure out how to ease your pocket. The easiest ways to hurt your babies are: over watering, over fertilizing, and bad soil. The big plant well its pretty much fuckered but im sure you figured that out by now. The seedlings look good. I recommend that you search through some journals and find a simple easy way to produce a decent nug(s) on a minimal budget. It can be done you just need to read literature to learn how to read the plant. P.S. try to put just one post about the topic to avoid pissing off the people that will help you.

There Is a lot of people in this industry that have big hearts. If you are hurting for equipment. Place an add on CL, explain your situation, barter, or do misc. jobs to obtain equipment. I have thrown away tons of gear that could have been useful to someone like you. You never know you might get lucky and find that person.

So can they go straight into a 5 gallon after germ? if so, would you still have to transplant into a bigger pot as it's roots would grow at the same rate as always without going through the shock of being transplanted?

When my plants first started out, i would give them a regular size water bottle of water, wait a few days until soil was completely dry and repeat. When they hit about a month, I would give each plant a gallon of water, maybe twice a week. Cannabis plants like a wet/dry cycle. Thats why it's good to let soil dry before watering again. If you want check out some of my threads, I have many threads about beginning growing, (as i am a new grower too) and many basic normal questions are answered in those threads. You might have use for some of the info. I also have a journal thread from seed to till now, that I think you would benefit from, use it as a guide to make sure your on track.

Healthy plants with well established root zones experience very little stress from transplanting. I transplant 3-4 times before finish pot. My bro puts them straight in finis pot. IMO my plants have well established root zone with fat stocks. He has pencil dick stocks. Healthy roots means healthy shoots.

Agreed ^^^ … I went right from a start pot to a finish pot, and now that i look back if there was one thing i would change, it would be to move up gradually with different size pots.(small,medium,large,finish) My plants stems are still wicked thick and healthy, but i have a feeling if i would have used more pots, my plants might be a little bigger and more developed right now.

Keep it simple. Search the forums, do some research, keep asking questions. The joy of growing is learning, IMO. You don't need expensive soils, designer nutrients, and HID lights to grow(even though I use all 3 of those things, lol). There are a lot of people on here killing it with CFLs! A general rule with CFLs is the more the better. It's pretty hard to have TOO many cfls, but it's easy to not have enough.
