A test in progress.... Miracle Grow soil vs. Fox Farms soil. Is MG really that bad?

The seeds are starting to split, so it won't be long now. I can say this, for sure, they'll all be grown in MG soil. I haven't bought any yet, but it's nice and close by, whereas FF stuff is a couple hour drive. After seeing the results for myself, it's MG all the way, gnats or not.lol

i started in MG soil and my plants got nute burned so0 bad. had to switch em over to FFOF, wherre they thrived. i read the post, but didnt see any probs with early nute burn. have u ever had MG soil nute burn seedligns below 12"?

Yes,
But its very minor, it ususaly gives the first set of leafs brown tips.
Nothing to worry about.

Did you give em fertz?
Cause you got to wait a few weeks befor you start that.

Naw, it was ph baslanced straight water for the first two weeks. it was in MG moisture control. they grew like on steroids, although the nute burn kicked in and i had to change them to a new medium. I went with FFOF, where they took off. however, FFOF is decent, not the greatest, and i still had to buffer the soil with lime because my runoff was coming in around 5.2

im all about coco coir now with canna nutes...easiest, most effeicent, albeit expensive, way to go.

Miracal grow Moisture controll contains alot of coco coir, its what controls the moisture
I used to thank it was water absorbing polymers tell I looked on there web site.

Did you bother to read the entire thread? It clearly shows MG soil to be superior to the more expensive FF soil through the culmination of the test.
As for ordering soil on line, good luck getting a reasonable price on a 50 lb bag through UPS (that equals
$ 185.00 UPS ground to my door plus the cost of the soil). Where is the savings there? :wall:
thats alot of money for soil. idk how much a 50bag is but, i can get 12qt bags of FFOF for 7.95 and $12 shipping. so around $20 online. you just gotta find the right place.

The problem is that many mail-order sites refuse to use USPS (flat rate boxes are the shit), and from there the UPS rates (even ground) skyrocket when items are headed to AK.

I can get FF from the local hydro shop for a bout 20, but they are about 30 miles away. I can get MG from lowes or Homedepot for less than 10 bucks and they are only 12 miles away. MG has been shown to grow just as well as the other soils.......Most poeple dont want to ship lg qty of soil to their place. Plus most people dont like going to the grow shops because 5.0 has shown they like to stake out these places. Just my 2 cents.

Excellent thread! I have read the whole thing here in one sitting. I wish I had come across this a little while ago. I went to the local hydro shop and bought a bag of FFOG.... I could have saved the possible notice by the po po and saved money by picking up a bag of MG at the local Ace Hardware. :P
Oh well, I dropped seeds today and they will have to live with their cushy upscale home of FFOG when they pop and get transplanted! LOL

Great Thread!!!! What soil are you Miracle Growers using to sprout the seeds in? I would imagine a mix that feeds for a month or two would burn the taproot. Also what is everyone's outcome with organic? Reading this, I had planned on sprouting in basic, clean topsoil or boiled coco coir. Then transplanting into a mix of Organic MG/Vermiculite/Perlite with a few easy to acquire nutes, like bat guano, azomite, Epsom salt, and worm castings. Im trying to make an organic, just water soil until i get into the later flowering stages similar to subcools supersoil. If anyone has done this, or has an idea, does the MG Organic seem too strong for younger plants?

I use the MG seed starter soil or RooT Riot/Rockwool cubes to start seeds.

I have started seeds in the MG Moisture Control mix though, mixing adequate amounts of perlite and vermiculite ontop of the MG Moisture C. slightly stirring it so it can ease into the MG soil.
That sounds like a nice idea very similar to Subcools super soil, except you are using MG, maybe you might just go a little easy on the added nutes. like not as much as subcool uses. since the mg organic is a hotter soil than Roots Organics i believe. I think you can get a more detailed answer in the super soil thread though.

Best of luck with your super soil variation :weed:

glad i picked up the topping method from someone in this thread, I am using MG myself, but as far as this test, since it was not completed, the overall results are simply inconclusive...a shame.

It wasn't completed because there was an indication that Jaw was being watched and possibly set up to be raided, so he had to chop all of the plants before they went to flower to finish off the test grow.
