A test in progress.... Miracle Grow soil vs. Fox Farms soil. Is MG really that bad?

Finally, I've decided to find out just how terrible MG soil really is, and am testing it myself. I'm using MG Potting mix, the kind that "Feeds Up To 3 Months", against Fox Farms soil, which if a 50/50 mix of Ocean Forest and Happy Frog. The only thing added to either of them, is perlite,(approx 25%) so that their drainage qualities are near the same.

I plan to get the verdict, at week 4 of 5 or veg. That should show clearly, which soil is more fertile, or how similar they actually are. I also plan on giving them nothing but Calmag Plus and Dynagro Protekt(silica supplement), via root-feeding, which'll keep things pretty even. All other feeding will be foliar, til it's time for 12/12. Should be interesting.

Here's some pics. They are newly rooted clones of Ice, going strainght into their 4 gallon pots. That should keep things even, plus, prove/disprove the myths against MG burning plants with it's time-released nutes, and also focus on overwatering issues, which it's known for. The FF is in the closest two pots, and the MG is the two in the back.
a friend always had good luck with the ocean fox farm, i heard that MG was bad for the plants, how is it workin out????

†twitches† dude, he just updated it...you didn't even bother to look, did you. No, no you didn't...go back a page and you'll see an update, rather than having to wait for an answer, you can look for yourself...just a thought...thats all...

but yea, mg is a bad influence for your girls, he'll get them doing hard drugs and pimp them out on the street, and thats if your lucky...†LOL† sorry, being a smartass....if all someone says is "its bad for them" but can't tell you how, then they probably didn't really know, or they would have been more specific.

I bought my MG organic at a menards and it was mid winter when I bought it if that tells you anything. It could have been old or a lot of things, But ya I had way to much bark in it and it was reddish bark not dark decomposed bark like you'd want. I can tell you it was bought in The US and thats it. Ive heard about regional thing to with what they have around naturally to make it.

I am not slamming MG just didn't have the best luck with it and trying something else. I'm def following this thread hope its a good fight to the DEATH!!!! BUt here is my last grow with MG organic.

Looking good JAW!

I think that was about 6 weeks in. It was on a 400 hps. 3 gal pots. Had a lot of leave curl but that was from my hard water. Wont have that problem again. Hey Culligan man!!!

It turned out to be pretty good Trainwreck too. I should of let them go a bit more though not quite the high I was looking for but would fuck you up.

^Yeah, they don't look too bad, actually. Looks like the yield was a little low though, wich was probably because of that stress you mentioned. I'm hoping that perlite will be the great equalizer. I mixed it at 1 gallon perlite, to 3 gallons MG soil. If that don't fix the overwatering problems, nothing will.lol I added some to the FF's as well, until both types looked about even.

Also, about the regional thing, I'm thinking there's alot of truth to that. I had fungus gnat problems soooo bad with the MG soil, that I had no choice, other than switching. If that was a problem all over the country, MG wouldn't be selling any soil, by now.lol That bag of MG I'm using right now, has been dry, and sitting in my house for a year, so hopefully, that killed off any gnat larvae. I have my fingers crossed, and so far, so good. :)

Forgot about I bought a bag of MG from WAL-MArt and had same thing and a small weed growing in it. It was all root and no leaves crazy shit. But that bag was wet when I bought it. Alot to do with handler.

^Funny that you mention that, because that's where mine came from too, Walmart. Stupid bastards let their soil sit outside in the rain, sun, etc...all year long, getting soaked,(literally, I've had bags that were drenched) and probably going acidic. Of course it's going to get bugs in it, under those conditions. That's probably where alot of the MG soil problems come from, now that I think about it. Hmm....well, I'll leave the "shitty, acidic, drenched, bug infested, MG soil test", to someone else. I don't want any part of it, and those damn gnats.LOL

I swear I never realized how much growing was going to be like being a scientist. It seems like its experiment after experiment...we should have our own version of the Nobel peace prize, seriously...growers comparing they're research, and the ones found the most useful in different categories would get a medal, the Weedbel Peace prize...nah, doesn't work...I'll keep thinking on it...let me smoke a few bowls real quick....

Hey saw this thread so i thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. My little buddy here started from seedling andjust started 12/12 today. Home boy here is 5 weeks old at 10.5-11". I am a first time grower here so bare with me haha.

But I bought some MG "6 month time release" not knowing I had a hydro store just 5 miles away (discovered this 2 weeks ago....bought all kinds of botanicare and will buy ff next time if this thread proves fit). I built a 1.2x1.2x4' box with all the nooks and crannys in it (controlls 10 lights, y splitter sockets are being put in tomorrow). But I didn't really have any problems to my knowledge.

Growth was always steady and only had a little burn because i thought id nute em in the first week! (lol). But since then its been fimmed and has been pretty smooth sailing, no complaints here bout MG in the maryjane business.

^LOL, Yeah, it's pretty hard to concentrate on plants, when that avatar is right there in ur face, eh? Wait, what were we talking about, again? IDK, but I'm going to go have myself a nice fresh breakfast muffin, with my coffee, while I try to remember. I got that urge, for some strange reason.

I am a newbe I never thought about growing. My wife threw out a few seeds out back and they grew. I put them in MG in about a 1 1/2 gallon pots, I found this great site and thought I would become a pro, LOL I had 3 girls and 4 boys being a dumbass I left my girls on the back porch and moved the males way out back. My boys were just flowering away. My girls started blooming and after 5 weeks alot of thc on the buds the bitches got pregant. So now I have enough seeds to plant a forest. I guess this makes me newbe dumbass of the year. I am still reading on how to become a pro so maybe next year I will have my own good smoke and it will be in MG, unless I find a job. Good luck on your test I'll be watching.

Hey Organic,

Hope you don't mind but I have a suggestion for you. At Home Depot (casa dePOT) they sell 4' x 8' sheets of 1/2" thick white insulating foam board for around $6 a sheet. A couple of sheets of it on those brick walls will really help increase your lighting intensity by bouncing it back on to the plants. And with a little bit of wood framing it shouldn't be to hard to make a couple of easily movable screens out of it to "box in" the other 2 sides of the grow space.
