Accidentally ordered carbob filter that is way too large. Will this work?

5X5 tent with an 8" AC S8, planning on being dialed down around 50%. The problem is I accidentally ordered a 8x39" phresh filter rated for like 900 CFM. I don't even think that will fit inside the tent (bht thats another issue entirely.)

Since I will be running the fan at around 400cfm, is the 900cfm filter total overkill? What would happen if I used the two together? Better carbon scrubbing? Worse?

Any help is much appreciated.

Ehh I can't say...id probably say just return it if that's a option...if your going to do this do it right I'm a firm believer of this. Just my opinion...I'd return it and if I knew I was getting my money back I'd go ahead and order the correct filter tonight shouldn't be no more than a extra week of waiting...I suggest the guerilla grow tents have a sick ass carbon filter they just dropped 5 monthes ago. Sorry I couldn't be no more of a help than that

8x39 is massive lmao

If I had to guess I'd say that fan couldnt pull enough air threw the filter...I'd make sure the ratings matched everything...and who knows maybe this was a blessing

What brand did you go with ?

The 8" AC infinity blows a ton of air even on the low settings. Do you have another fan for an intake? I don't think a 5x5 has enough passive intakes to handle it at 50%. Honestly, I think you'll probably be fine with that filter-the CFM rating on the filter is the max it can take, but the lower the cfm you use, the better the filter works. Usually they work best at half (or even less) the CFM they are rated for, so you have to decide if that's enough ventilation for your tent. Personally, I think 450 cfm is probably way more than you need. I have the same fan but in a 4x4, and I keep it on the lowest setting and that's still a ton of air being moved. I think you got pretty much the perfect combo there-great fan and filter.

That's what I figured at first when I ordered the larger filter, but this is reassuring, thanks.

Also, I said run it at 50% but I did mean step it down to as low as I can.

If you can mount it comfortably it will be awesome. Outside the tent is fine in this case it's so much overkill.

A filter clogs over time, having more filter than needed will cause it to last 18months or more ime. You will never have the issue of lower output due to clog which is killer. It doesnt matter where the filter is, sure pulling out is more efficient but in this case it wont matter, any inefficiency will be overcome by the extra surface area.

I ran oversized filters and they are killer!

I got a Phresh. I've never seen a Gorilla branded filter. How are they?
You said phresh too lol my bad....I still have Mine in the box...they use hand selected coconut carbon fr what I've gathered it's pretty good...I chose them over ac infinity...althought ac infinity has great fans and I have one...I felt like guerilla took a little more pride in there filters...

So like I said maybe this was a blessing and it was..they said your filter should last atleast 18 monthes or more

I wonder how good those phresh filters are...I actually haven't really heard of them myself

***
So phresh says they're filters last up to 2 years Vs. guerilla saying theirs last 12-18 monthes

Phresh uses a %100 virgin Austrian activated charcoal (just like ac infinity) Vs. guerilla uses a %100 virgin activated coconut charcoal

Coconut is suppose to be superior but more expensive with a shorter life span

I've asked this question before here in RIU and nobody had a answer so this is what I've gathered doin my own research...I'm sure ethier will do fine I just wanted to treat myself this round

Keep it!!!

The contact time will be increased, so the efficiency of removing the smell!

Way better to use higher cfm carbon filter and lower cfm fan than going "on par".

If you end up mounting outside the tent and pushing air threw it, don’t forget to use a pre filter on the inside rather then the outside of the filter, to protect the carbon bed.

Ok so I have never setup the filter after the fan...but in my head you did correctly call me out on this one. I never would have thought of it. Lol

If you can mount the filter somehow, having it oversized has several advantages.
  • Lasts longer until you have to refurbish it with fresh coal; refurbishing is the same amount of work for a small or large filter
  • Lets more air through, better ventilation overall
  • Maybe slightly less noisy setup
The only drawback is that this will be a fucking pain to handle. A yard-long filter must weigh a ton. Maybe set it up outside the tent, on the floor. I would not want that thing to topple my grow tent or fall on my head while I'm tending the plants.
