Okay, I know the title was a little confusing, but here's an explanation:
I was just researching the effects of chlorine in tap water. I decided I wanted to get either an RO system, or use some kind of filter at the water source.
The way I've always set up my reservoirs is to have one above another, using a float valve to keep the fill. In the top reservoir I'd have my airstone blasting bubbles, because I thought this was a method of removing chlorine. I was wrong. This doesn't work, especially if the tap water contains chloramine, which is a mix of chlorine and ammonia. Chloramine is more effective at killing bacteria and it stays around a lot longer.
After some thought I came up with a possible solution. What if I used an aquarium filter on my top reservoir (which is on a float valve from the tap)? I use 50 gallon reservoirs, which is nothing for an activated carbon aquarium water filter.
I started researching that idea and it seemed like people were trying to use it on their main reservoir. Subsequently, this results in nutrient levels beings thrown off as they are filtered as well.
So, whatcha all think? Good idea, bad idea, got a better idea?
