advanced aeroponics build....

Hello to all, hope you enjoy and can help

So Im advancing my skills of growing by moving from indoor soil, to indoor aeroponics with fog. I already have the fog misters I picked up at the Home D-pot for a great deal, heres the webs site (aeromist.com). Now for the build, I want to flower 50 plants and have sort of a SOG (sea of green) set up. I will construct 2 containers with tops made out of plexiglass - 6' x 3' x 3' - looks like a huge fish tank. I will then cut out 5inch wholes for my baskets. I should be able to get 25 wholes for plants in each tank. I will run my fog on the inside bottom of my plexiglass box. I will have a water/nut tank that has about 40 gals and a 1000 psi pump and filter. It will gravity drain at one end, to a drain hose back into the water tank.

For lighting I have a light spinner that will hold two big 1000W lighting systems (Solar Revolution Rotating Light Mover). One bulb will be HPS, the other something else... forgot. I will also have fans and a CO2 set up.

So heres the questions......

1. Is it bad for the roots to be exposed to light? I plan on building my boxes out of plexiglass that is clear. I thought it would be cool to see the roots and the fog, but not if it hurts the roots. If it does I will just spray paint the outside black.

2. How long do the roots get in an aeroponic system? I plan on no more than 3 feet. Also remember plan on run a SOG system so they wont get as big.

Thanks for the help and I will be posting picks of the build and grow :joint::hump:

Sounds like a sick set up you got going there. Regarding your first question about the roots being exposed to light. You don't want any light what so ever to be on thoose roots. The best way is to just spray paint the tank black

TORO is correct, no light on the roots. In regards to the root length, they will definitely touch the bottom of your tank, But thats fine. And why not use a smaller basket so you could get a few more in there. There is no need for a large basket at all. Stuff in as many as possible. Each plant does not need 1sqft as most will recommend. Trim the bottom branches, and enjoy. Aero's, when done correctly, grow so much faster than anything else. So there is really no need to grow the whole plant to full maturity. "Lollipop" at about two weeks into flowering. That way you can have a dense canopy and not have to worry about anything under it. I use a aero/dwc I built myself and it works extremely well. So if you have any questions I would be glad to help.

Nice,
Thank you both, I think that I'll paint the top black and maybe leave the sides clear. Depending on how my first batch turns out i might have to paint it all. And now I am looking into smaller baskets, no need for the 5 inchers, might go with 2 inch baskets instead. Fitting a few more plants never hurt. Thanks a lot

roots should be in total darkness and to leave your sides clear and expose light to the roots, will be a mistake in my opinion.
