You can screw around with medium, methods, gels, cubes, rock wool, and after a lot of experience get somewhat close to what aero cloners can do in a few days. I cloned for outdoor for years using various methods, over time I got pretty good at it but maybe 80-90%. When I went indoor last year I built an aero-cloner for like $50 or something including pump. There is no comparison, and there is no better way to get successful clones than aero, 90-100% success rate in a few days. Not trying to get you to spend money, but if you can build one for $50, what will you spend in time and wasted clones/energy. Easiest fixture I've built for indoor and instant success. Listen to the aero folks like BobBitchen, particularly the one's who have tried many other methods before going aero... tap water, cut, scrape lightly, put into aero cloner, wait 4-7 days, nothing simpler imo.
