Advice for upcoming deluge of rain...

Use gloves, cut out the rot...Actually you shouldn't even have to cut it out is should just fall out with a tug...But anyhow, if it isn't a primary cola just remove the whole cola...get rid of the rot and hang the rest of the cola to dry...Let your main plant continue tho check it every day and then some more!

Was the rot caused by mold or Tobacco worm?

Mold I believe. I had done exactly as you suggested and removed that cola, pulled out the rotted portion plus surrounding bud and then hung it up with good airflow.

I am sitting under my plant cover, in the rain, sheltered harvesting my Black Cherry soda

So good news. Looks like it was contained to just that bud (from all appearances after a thorough examination). I'll be checking it constantly though and will be keeping it out of the dew in the garage every night.

Awesome! I have found that if you catch it soon enough you can "nip it in the bud"

Nice. I found just one lonesome moldy bud on my plant before the chop and it didn't spread. I'm sure you already do but put a fan on at night too. I bet you can't wait to chop her. It's bittersweet.
