Advice Needed And Help With PPFD

Hi guys, hope all is well :D

I built myself a DIY cob light using 10x CBD3590's run at 50w each, to use over a 150cm X 50cm canopy. I have only completed one grow under the light, which sadly resulted in one of the four plants grown throwing pollen sacks early/mid flowering which no doubt hurt my yield, which was far from great. I really want this next grow to turn out better and I have a nagging suspicion that I might not be using my new DIY light in the best manner possible.

I have tried to do the calculations for my PPFD, I come up with something around 1500 would be fantastic if someone could help me double check this. I was hanging the light at approx 30cm above canopy, if my PPFD really is 1500, is this way too close? I had a few issues with leaf curling away from light early in the grow but seemed to rectify itself as the grow progressed.

Any advice or insight on how I should be best utilizing my light in this space would be hugely appreciated! The CXB3590's are CD bin, 3500k chips.

hi Elder,
are u using reflectors?
Light is Legit & 500W will produce over POUND. :leaf::leaf::leaf::leaf::leaf::leaf:
Keep light 2ft above canopy when flipping & let stretch grow into sweet zone.
1500PPFD needs to run CO2.:eyesmoke:

Hey vertical ;-)

I am using Ledil Angelina reflectors, ill probably try snap a couple pictures tomorrow. I wont be able to introduce Co2 into the grow sadly, although id love to give it a go someday...I wonder if Co2 levels are not adequate for a given PPFD if growth is actual hindered and the plant damaged from the extra light energy it cannot utilize? My height in the growspace is pretty limited but I can definatly stay 2ft above at flip time

multiple light sources will always destroy this inverse sq law talked about in the video, which in turn takes away the need for lenses that shape the light beam.unless you mount the cobs extremely close together there will be tons of dead spots up high,so theres always a trade off. @MeGaKiLlErMaN could give you the ppdf, sounds high for the space but idk metric well enough and im too lazy to do the conversions lol.but if you are at 1500ppfd you would def benefit from using co2 above 1000ppm

"unfortunately [unstable genetics] " resulted in male pollen sacs"

you can throw almost anything at stable genetics..light changes, nutes, virtually ...anything]

all the best

I'll check this out after work, not near a computer. I need to do the 3500k 3590 anyways. But that will only give you the PPFD assuming you ran them super cool. Might be another calculator on the block in the future

That would be fantastic, if I know the PPFD then I might be able to get a rough idea of the height I should be hanging the light above the canopy and if I should maybe be running it at a lower power with my dimmer since I wont be adding extra Co2.

Regarding the herm from the last grow, your 100% correct oldmothersativa. When using reg seeds from a good breeder I have never had a herm, no matter the amount of neglect. The herm I had last grow was a Blue Kush fem seed from Dinafem....should have went with something more predictable for the first grow using this new light, but I had the seeds laying around had good luck with them in the past.

This grow will be a pack of Bodhi - Love Triangle, so should be all set to test out what this light can really do, when theres not pollen going all over the place lol!

I should probably add that im using the 10 cob growmau5 kit, with the pin style passive heatsinks. When the lights running full power the heatsinks get warm to the touch but definatly not "hot" so im guessing im running them relatively cool. Pretty good airflow/temps in my cab etc.
