Air cooled lights....

They do not cool radiant heat given off by the bulb but they do suck hot air out of the room, simple extractor and bare bulbs seems the same temps in my grow room :-)
Radiant heat and air temps are two different things. Plants can handle radiant heat of 50 degrees C, they cant handle close to that in air temps as I'm sure your aware.

They do work, I couldn't run 3 600w bare in my old set up, air temps would hit 90degrees f But I could with cooltubes, kept it at 81 f except for heat waves.

If you just think of a bare bulb as a heater, it heats the air around it, with air cooled hoods your removing that hot air as fast as its heated instead of allowing it to circulate your room and warm the whole average air temp up. Hot air bad. Radiant heat good.

I'm not worried about radiant heat, I use it.

Hooded light fixture - closed space - light on, heats the air in that space - The air is now pulled from the space with cool air coming in. Air is now cooler, bulb runs cooler - thus lives longer. Less heat is coming off the reflector, meaning. Less heat is now being distributed in the out side-the-hood area. Thus, you have to cool less.

If I do not use the hoods or turn on the air from the hoods. The heat builds mighty fast and the AC cost goes up about $315 more a month.

I say that that $315 decrease is tangible proof of measurable cooling from hooded light fixtures!

Square inverse law be damned
The tent acts like an air cooled hood to a bare bulb, the physics of energy input and output in the system are the same whether the bulb is enclosed or not.

If you guys are saying its not then i probably am missing something so perhaps i'll revisit this after some grow and read time, there are some flir images of leaf temps somewhere on the net with bare and aircooled bulbs so im sure i will find that there is some heat difference.

In the winter here in the UK we rely on some heat for our tents from the bulbs, my t5's have zero extraction in a small tent and just manage to keep it snug enough for good growth.

Thanks for your inputs :-)
