air exchange at night

i am a bit puzzled about how to do this. i understand air exchange is important for healthy plants. i run a 400cfm inline 24/7 at low-speed to do it. this has probably cost me a little more in electricity but i don't care if it gets the job done. i'm wondering if other people do the same with a passive air intake system? is it smarter to put the fan on a timer so it only works at certain intervals, thus saving energy? I was thinking about that but i'm not sure if it would be worse for my fan's lifespan.

i have a timer but it's not in use right now, i'm waiting until i switch to MH/HPS. I was wondering how common it is to run 2 separate timers, one for the lights to run 18/6 or 12/12 or whatever, and one for a big fan like mine to exchange air.

what do you think is the most effective (and safe) way to do this? thanks

So your fan is being used to exhaust your room 24/7 ? How large is your room?
yes. my 6" inline fan is constantly on pulling air out of a 4x4x8 room and bringing fresh air in through a couple passive air intakes. there is also an oscillating fan inside blowing at the plants. if i turn off the inline fan it gets pretty warm (80+ degrees) and i'm still using fluoros.

the inline fan is going to be running at a much higher speed when i switch over to a MH/HPS lamp though and i'm worried it will get too cold at night if its still running when the light is off, thats why i was wondering if its common to put the fans on a separate timer than the MH/HPS ballast, wat do you guys think?

I personly do and would recomend running all your fans 24/7. I run a 600w air cooled hood and a 4" fan/filter combo along with two 6" clip on fans in my 4x4 tent. I got it pretty dialed in now lights on temps 77-80 lights off I let it drop to 69-70.

I do run a 8k portable ac in the room so the ambients about 77. But thats required due to no central air in my house.

I use multiple timers for all my grow appliances. Just remember to check them regularly for they can malfunction. I personally dont run my intake 24/7 or my exhaust 24/7 they run about 18-20 hours.
