so there are a few spots where u can see through some buds. iv read that cfls cause "airy" buds. is that what that means? can they fill in toward the end of flowering and is there a good way to fix them after harvesting if they dont fill in? a little compressed is better than lose imo.

well what exactly does airy mean? is it what im describing? it looks dense but there are spots that have small spaces in some of them.

yes that what it means. that is why cfls suck. your plants look great during veg and then you get a nice light airy nug to your disappointment. the quality will be there but the weight wont thats why most serious growers flower with HIDs.

In a perfect world we all would use HID

I would buy a 600watt light right now, if i could hide it like i can cfl's.. but the answer to that is a huge no heat wise.
growing stealth forces me to use cfls. One day i will have some freedom to grow but not now not here.

You need more light. It means that the buds are stretching, usually happens with sativas. Try adding molasses (&carbs) to add some size/weight to the buds too...

you dont need a 600 to use HID a 150w hps is just as easy to hide and cool as the equivalent light output in cfls. the only difference is that with an HID the heat is more concentrated because it all comes from one bulb.

airy happens by the lights you use not by the strain and they will fill in a little but not a whole lot

ahh i see what your saying. Hmm i would surely love to use HID.. might be a xmas gift to myself.

dont take my advice. get an HPS and try it for yourself. i think your results will surprise you and you will never use CFLs for flowering again. also those 150w hps lights are pretty cheap. you can get a floralux 150 with enclosed ballst for about 80$ from www.htgsupply.com

Canabian, what type of plant are you growing and how far into 12/12 are they? Nothing else can be said until you tell us that. If you are only 3-4 weeks into flower they will be loose and airy. they haven't had time to grow and fill in yet. And then even after that you have to wait for them to swell and get fat. If you are 8 weeks into 12/12 and they are still small and airy, then you may have light issues. But even then, some sativa strains still have somewhat loose airy buds.

Your lights could be too far away. My first few grows i used cfl's and was getting pretty nice decently dense nugs. I always had the lights within an inch or 2 from the plants.

Exactly. That's the great thing with CFL's too, is that you can have a plant covered with lights 1-2" away, and the really isn't much heat expulsion from the lights.

What are your temps?

High temps (heat stress) causes calyxes to stretch and the nugs loose their compactness.

hmm..maybe they are just little spots where its growing different. nice replies though lol didnt expect so many. but yea there is no stretching being done i mean these things are pretty fat lol. theres 6 tops but after moving leaves around most of it is pretty dence there are a few small little areas that look like they would be there own bud if trimmed.

a few pics so you guys can see what u think if this looks airy.

i was wondering. when can/do you add molasses? when is it to late? when is the best time?
and anyone who has an eye for it, how much longer does this look like it will be until its ready?

you can get dense nugs from cfls. You have to constantly reposition them though. As in daily. They ALWAYS need to be about 2" from a budsite. You should have a bunch of cfls hanging from a bunch of cords so that you can properly set the individual cfls at the right distance. If you do all that and achieve a blanket of light around your plant...you will have dense nugs. I switched to a 250 watt mh/hps because the cfl adjustments were a p.i.t.a. But you CAN get dense buds from cfls. Period.
