Allergic to Codeine, How bout Morphine?

Alright so a friend of mine is allergic to Codeine, he had taken it when he was a baby and broke out in a rash and had breathing problems.
My friend is taking the opportunity to get a hold of some Morphine, but he isn't sure if he should eat any of it, as the symptoms are awful & can possibly die.

So from your knowledge, what would the community suggest he do? If he only took a lick could the symptoms be bad?

Also, my friend has eaten Hydrocodone plenty of times, and has had Opium smoke in his mouth a few times. ( Never really inhaled it completely cause he was scared )

Any idea what amount of codiene your friend was given as an infant? Not being allergic to the hydro kind of makes sense. Morphine and codiene are both natural opiates, not opioids so that means they both come from opium which come from the poppy plant. So I would think that if your friend is allergic to codeine, that morphine might not be so friendly either. But if you HAVE to take it, just try 5mg and see if you get any bad effects and make sure you're with someone.

Now if you were doing an OPIOID, then you prolly wouldn't have as much as a problem or even any at all because they are mostly or all synthetic. Correct me if I'm wrong.

What fast said is partially correct. Generally semisynthetic and fully synthetic opioids have less histamine effects than the natural ones. Codeine happens to have the most of them all. So it's hard to predict what your friend's reaction will be. Since he can take hydrocodone without a problem he will probably be ok. If he wants to try it he should take an antihistamine beforehand, I'd reccomend he uses Zyrtec at least two hours before hand and take like 5mg to make sure it's ok before trying a larger dose. Or trade the morphine core something like hydro.

Can't answer for morphine.
On the other hand, codeine allergy (hives) is not necessarily a generic opiate allergy.
I've seen some people go full blown almost die reaction to codeine (full body hives, ie: swollen blood vessels) who were able to take oxycodone (percs) with no problem.

You got what I was saying and finished it ha. Like I said do the 5mg at first. Zyrtec works great. What about Benedryl? I personally don't like it but I was just wondering.

Test- That's most likely because oxycodone is semi-synthetic. As to say you cannot make oxycodone directly from the poppy or opium as you can morphine. Not to say that there aren't other ingredients in morphine, it obviously requires more than just opium to make it.

Benedryl works but can add to the sedation.

Benedryl gives me the worst hangover's for some reason. Even when I just take benedryl to sleep.

It does that to some people. Zyrtec is awesome though.

I would avoid the antihistamines, and take an incredibly small dosage, just to see if there is an adverse reaction. That's really the only way I can think of safely figuring out the answer.

Hi Domed, I know this post comes quite late because I just stumbled upon it trying to find out why I was allergic to Tylenol 4 with codeine (same symptoms as yours, hives etc.) but not morphine. For what it's worth now, if you are still pondering whether to take morphine, here's my experience. I don't remember taking any other form of codeine other than in Tylenol #4 but was trying to figure it out and is how I got here. A friend offered me a 60 mg. morphine pill, me knowing I was allergic to supposedly codeine. I decided I would try half of it since the Tylenol 4 was a significantly strong pill and I didn't go to anaphylactic shock. Result was, I felt absolutely no feelings of any allergic reactions. I have Cervical and Lumbar Spondylosis and knee arthritic conditions and was previously taking Hydrocodone. My doctor had prescribed me up to 190 mgs. of Morphine a day and had no reactions to it. I JUST WANT TO EMPHASIZE THIS MAY NOT BE IN YOUR CASE. We all know that every body chemistry is different. But just wanted to inform you and all out there that it is possible to be allergic to one but not the other. IF anyone allergic to codeine had decided to try it, I would suggest to try a very small amount and work your way up to the amount needed to relieve your pain. I was trying to find out if it was something else in the formulation of the Tylenol other than codeine that was causing my reaction. Thanks to all by reading these posts, I think it is the codeine. Also, I am not allergic to any other drug I have taken other than codeine and I've pretty much had them all due to many surgeries. Demerol, Dilaudid, etc.

there is a REASON Your friend is allergic to that bullshit

Run an allergy test.

Rub some on wet skin and wait. No effect? Some in your mouth, no effect? Take a very small amount oraly, no effect? Take a bit more, no effect? You are probably OK.
