I have decided to write an 'article' about Designated Providers in Washington State. It seems we have some confusion about them.
A DP is someone you select to provide you with your medication. This person does not need any special license or anything, as long as they are 18+ With that in mind, I have some tips for anyone looking for a provider.
1) If possible grow your own medication. I know alot of people can't because of living situations or medial conditions, but if your concern is you wife is not a patient or your have children in the home. Fear not, the law specifically protects anyone in your home from constructive possession (being in the same room) charges.
2) So, you can't grow for another reason or you are still not comfortable around it. 1st things 1st do not choose a provider into actual drugs, preferably someone who only deals with patients. If he gets raided, the cops will automatically think you know about his operation. And we all know what that means "A local drug dealer was arrested today and the police are now investigating his ties to the medical marijuana community. They always emphasize marijuana.
3) Don't select someone who is looking to profit off of your medical condition(s). I don't give a fuck how good the weed is, try to find someone who wants to help. A family member or a close friend is best. Finding someone who only charges supplies is HARD to do. With cannabis having a street value of over 400 an ounce in some places, most people could not give 2 fucks about you needing medication.
4) Paperwork, paperwork, PAPERWORK - I am a provider for my fiancé's father. He is a disabled vet and in the grow room, I keep a plastic multi-pocket folder in a clear plastic bag to protet it from rain/dust etc... In 1 pocket a copy of his recomendation, DL and a copy of a DP form, you can get it free HERE
In another folder I keep a copy of my DL, my expired old recommendation, my current recommendation, and a copy of my paperwork from Kadlec showing where they not only knew I was a patient, but ALLOWED ME to vape in my hospital room (just to piss them off).
When you walk into my grow, the folder sits on a small table in the entrance, so as soon as you open the doors here is a folder that says ATTN: LAW ENFORCEMENT on it. I even listed an emergency number for it. No worries it's a backup cell phone, not my actual one. I keep a copy of all of this in the house locked up and the originals ONLY COME OUT IF A JUDGE ORDERS THEM OUT... PERIOD.
6) Make sure the DP knows what they are doing, last thing you need is a jar of meds that taste like shit because they weren't flushed.
Here is what I told her father. I can grow with any soil/nutes you want to buy but you are buying the pest control I use. I am obsessive about bugs in my zen garden :bong: He made it simple and said he was impressed with my results so just do everything the same.
7) You can not be a DP for more than 1 person at a time. Sorry fellas no 728 patient grow for you (legally). And if you are not a patient, you can NOT grow for 2 patients - in other words it's either you grow for you and 1 patient or 1 patient, however, this is often ignored on the west side of the state where dispensaries operate with no police trouble but if you are in the 509 like myself, that shit wouldn't fly here. As a matter of a fact a guy tried HARD - he tried going about it the 'right' way. He went before city council and told them he wanted approval, tried to schedule meetings with the county prosecutor and 3 days later 'an anonymous tip' led them to his outdoor grow in the privacy fenced home his family grew up in. Later that year about 16 patients sat in his back yard and trimmed his plants with no trouble from the neighbors, one even came over and had a burger. It was obvious his neighbors cared less. Luckily the cops respected the law, they counted his 16 plants (his recommendation was for 40), didn't even take a sample or a picture while him and his young daughter stood there talking to the police. No arrests no warnings they actually respected the law and left. might have something to do with them having to give back everything they seized from him in an ILLEGAL raid years back. His name is Chet Biggerstaff look him up, he is very open about this, fucking news articles with him sitting in front of ounces.
If you live in a small area that the cops will crack down on you like I do, be careful not to break the law. I have seen people with 17 plants get drug through court - baby plants outside not even monster plants. If your wife gets pulled over with a bag of your cannabis and she is high, that constructive possession law is null and void. She will get in trouble. I know alot of you may have non medical family/friends you smoke with and I really don't care but please keep your smoke private and discreet.
If you have any questions, I'm here to help. This is not intended to be legal advice and may differ from the actual law depending on when you read this. For more information on the law you can read it HERE and the Washington State Departement of Health FAQ can be found HERE and finally the legal definitions can be found HERE

If you are worried about your children being taken, as long as you keep the grow secure and you aren't blazing around them - you should be ok. If you are a legit patient and not breaking any laws you will have your day in court and there will be plenty of people behind you. If you have social workers already involved or a resident with a federal job, this may complicate things.69.51A.050
