Alternatives to ball/kerr canning jars?

Is it possible, when working with rye grain, to use other jars instead of the traditional ball/kerr canning jars?

I know they are ideal for a few reasons, but if i have another glass jar that will allow gas exchange, any downside to using it?

Answer found. Seems like almost any clean, sturdy glass jars are useable.

will the GE go through a filter? Bc if it does not your jar will become contaminated very quickly.
