Am I overdoing it?

Is 5 23W (100 W equiv.) CFLs for a 1' tall plant in a cabinet overdoing it? The area is ventilated but would going with less lights do fine?

i'm not sure you can overdo it with CFLs.... the more light the better - provided you keep temperatures down.

4-23 watters would be okay for a 1 foot plant as long as your using the 6k kinds for veg.....and dont add to much because its just gonna add heat in your grow box. if your walls arnt already whtie buy some poster board and cover the interior.

Five is just fine man. If you want to use less get 2 or 3 42 Watt CFL's. And yes, make sure you have some sort of reflective material (i.e. flat white walls or mylar) other than tin foil, as tin foil can create hot spots and burn plants. And as far as I know poster board is not flat white so it won't focus 100% of your light onto your plants, but for a cheap first time grow I suppose it will work.

Yeah make sure they are the cool spectrum lights. Or better yet, go to a hydro shop and you can find some pretty b!tchin CFl's

23W is the highest wal-mart carrys.
They are soft-white CFLs.
The walls of the cabinet are painted white. The lights aren't really above the plant, they are more off to the side. some on the floor. Since it is only a 1.5 X 1.5 (well really 1 ft high because of a shelf in the cabinet) X 1 ft roughly cube, it is pretty light in there. My plant is growing steadily day by day

I do have to watch heat. I do have a 6" fan ducted with foil and tape forcing air out a 1" hole. Even with the fan it can get hot. When I noticed some heat burns I moved my CFLs back and reduced it to four. This should be sufficiant.

Is there a problem with having CFLs off to the side of the plant? I do rotate the plant. I understand it is not the most efficiant way, but it seems to be working fine for my VERY limited environment.

I think I will veg for another week then switch over to a SOG type grow w\ clones. Does it sound like a good idea to put my rockwool\clones in a ziplock bag with a very dilute nutrient solution. This will ensure maximum humidity and keep the clonelings moist. I will place the bags in a shaded area outside, opening them to vent of course.
