Avoid? There was not a draft when I was young and joining the military is not something people who in college did when I was a kid. I don't know if I would call it avoid though. Most of the people I know who join did so because they had limited opportunities, were poor, or gullible. I do know a few elite military type people who went to West Point and the whole 9 yards, but they are very different bread. Can't think of a single reason to join. Not once in my lifetime have I seen them used in a way I agree with. I am also against having such a large standing military to begin with.
