A controversial law that will make it harder for foreign tourists to buy cannabis at the Netherlands' famous coffee shops has been upheld by a Dutch court.
The law, which reverses 40 years of liberal drugs policy in the Netherlands, is targeted at the many foreigners who have come to see the country as a soft drugs paradise and to tackle a rise in crime related to the drug trade.
The law, which goes into force in three southern provinces on May 1 before going nationwide next year, means coffee shops can only sell cannabis to registered members.
Only locals, whether Dutch or foreign residents, will be allowed to join a coffee shop, and each coffee shop will be limited to 2,000 members. Some users regard the requirement to register as an invasion of privacy.
Fourteen coffee shop owners and several pressure groups challenged the law in the courts, saying they should not be asked to discriminate between locals and non-locals.
A lawyer for the coffee shop owners said they would appeal.
The Dutch government, which collapsed at the weekend, had also planned to forbid any coffee shops within 350 meters (yards) of a school, with effect from 2014.
The government in October launched a plan to ban what it considered to be highly potent forms of cannabis - known as "skunk" - placing them in the same category as heroin and cocaine.

Way to go Dutch people! Now you're paving the way for MORE crimes and black market activities and civil unrest, just like it is in America... I'm pretty pissed that half of the US has med bills in place, but the rest of the country has to suffer because the Feds refuse to face the re-scheduling of cannabis... But our lawmakers in DC arent very worried about it, as they have medical mj for themselves... Fuck prohibition of any kind in the ass with a wiffleball bat! I'm a legalizer, not a medicalizer, as the whole stance of "I'm a patient, not a criminal" implies that if one isn't a patient, then they must be a criminal, which couldn't be further from the truth of the matter... But, unless the Dutch laws have been passed by now, then I highly doubt they will be... I mean, itz tha 'dam afterall...

I've got a few dutch mates who were telling me about the government collapsing, and how it is really bad news for social welfare etc. But also, with a collapsing government there is alot of uncertainty, so its not over till the fat lady sings. These law changes have always been looming over The Netherlands, at least over the last 7-8 years I have been visiting. I'm sure the people at the top are aware of the ecconomic repercussions of keeping foreigners out of the coffee shops, I hope this will help sway things like it has done up untill this point.

abit of a shame...but i think its very expensive now....i went 20 years ago.....n like u say u can get good weed ova here...its just who u know x

isn't hash like 40-60 bucks a gram or some crazy shit like that......
Last time I was in Amsterdam it was half the price you pay where I live, generally speaking. You may pay $40 for a gram of hash but it would be the upper tier stuff that melts your face. Go to Rotterdam however, and the weed flows mighty cheap my friends. The best cheese I have ever smoked was from rotterdam (I'm afraid to say), and it was like 10euros for 2gr or sumin.
