Another aeroponic question.....not sure about air pump

I was wondering what size air pump should be purchased for an 18 gallon tote that has 6 pots? Do you need 2 air pumps? One for an air stone in the bottom of the tote, and one down in the water to push the water to the spray nozzles?

The more I think about it the more I question how I was gonna build one. lol

Here's a link to a good pump (http://www.plantlightinghydroponics.com/dual-diaphram-396-gph-air-pump-p-234.html)
and also a link to a thread similar to this from back in July:(https://www.rollitup.org/newbie-central/336728-396-gph-air-pump-two.html). From what I can gather from the DWC users on here aeroponics is just an added unnecessary step. Just get ya a good sized pump like above, and use 3 or 4 airstones off of that one pump (http://www.aerogarden.com/airstones-5-pack.html). Use the clay pellets http://www.horticulturesource.com/product_info.php?products_id=1313, w/ netpots( http://www.amazon.com/Round-Pots-3-75-inch-Heavy/dp/B001RUL5GU), and your golden!

Kind of a hard question to answer, ha ha.... Are u gonna do a system where you have the tote as the res, and just cut 6 holes in the lid for the plants, and have the roots soaking in the solution? Thats called a dwc, search it on here. In that case u actually dont need nozzles. spray nozzels is a little more advanced hydoponics wich might not be the best route for a newbie .But will will need a couple air stones. i would go to wall mart or what ever and get a 4 port 1/4" air pump, they like maybe $20 then you can run 4 air stones in your main resavoir. just do a simple DWC. my first ever grow was with (4) power grower hydro buckets and it was awesome!

nox, it sounds like you are planning a hybrid aero/dwc roughneck. I have one and built it from some plans that Filthyfletch posted on this site. You are planning a PVC manifold with EZ spray heads right? That is going to require a water pump, not air. I use a 2 outlet air pump with 2 of those blue 6" airstones at the bottom of the tub.

Yea, I was thinking of doing a hybrid as you mentioned. Does this work well though? Do the plants end up drowning from the sprayers spraying water on them, and eventually from the roots going down into the water at the bottom? Also, another question I have is how long do you set the sprayers up to spray for. I keep seeing that you have them run for 1 minute then off for 4 minutes. But can you have them run for 15 minutes straight and then off for 15 minutes? It's kind of difficult for me to find a timer that can be set up to run for just 1 minute on and a few minutes off and do it on a constant basis, unless I want to pay 75 for a cycle timer.

The cycle timer that you mention is really only needed for true aero like stink buddie, I think. The first grow I ran the water pump all the time start to finish, after that I took it out and ran it as DWC after the roots hit the water. I didn't notice a big difference and tub doesn't leak with DWC, it did with the water pump running. It was not a a major leak, the lid isn't water tight. Next time I will go just DWC, I'm working with hempy buckets right now.

When you said you ran the water pump from start to finish are you talking about you ran it 24 hrs a day all the way until harvest? And I was wondering about the water leakage from the lid with having sprayers. I thought about getting some of that rubber/foam weather seal and putting it around the rim of the tote and then putting the lid on it, maybe that will help seal it up some so it doesn't leak. Also, what size pump were you using with the sprayers? Do you have to get one that puts out 250+ gallons per hour for an 18 gallon tote?
