I'm not saying it is a success. I think it is too early to assign it either status, thus far I can see it's limitations and potential pitfalls, but I can also see some good it's doing.
Perhaps on a global scale you are right. But I would say even then the global left starts somewhere this side of socialism. Perhaps France is a true global/historical center. Capitalistic with a strong streak of socialism.
But luckily America has very little extreme right or left. In my view unfettered capitalism is about centrist as far as world/history goes.
In terms of American politics, which makes the most sense when talking about American politics, Obama and present day democrats are pretty damn left wing.

In France, sure historically, but the French socialist party was neutered a long time ago, as made evident by Hollande's lack of a spine. The Nordic countries now hold that mantle.

The last time a major political party was this far to the left in the United States you have to go back to William Jennings Bryan around the turn of the 20th century. Everyone got much more conservative over the course of the 20th century, until the last quarter of it, and they have started moving back to the left.
Going back over a century is not that accurate as far as measuring things, though. The priorities and expectations of government was so different then. If Obama isn't the most liberal president in US history, who is?
