Anxiety: MH vs. HPS

Alright...

12 children under 400w MH at 77F and 30%
Five 7" plants are 4 weeks from germ (some seven fingered leaves)
Seven 4" plants are 2.5 weeks from germ

I'm wondering what would happen if the 400w MH was swapped for a 400w HPS before putting them into 12/12. It'd be nice to start 12/12 within a month (2month veg, yikes) and if the HPS would increase their grow rate during the next month before then that'd be great cuz they're growing up a little slow.

If they shuld keep chillin under the MH i'm down with that too :blsmoke:

you wont be able to flower in a month. most strains are ready to harvest after 7-9 weeks of flower and some take up to 11 weeks. metal halide bulbs are used in veg so that the plants dont stretch and it makes the buds more compact and less whispy. hps is more effective during flowering. once you switch to 12/12 and put the hps in, it will increase growth, but to harvest after only 4 weeks of 12/12 would be a waste of yield and potency. ive heard of people putting them under hps a week before switching to 12/12 but never heard of any amazing results, someone may prove me wrong though. if your trying to have a full grow in three months, nextime veg for a month and use the other 2 months for flower.

now that i re-read it i think you might have meant switch to 12/12 a month from now, not harvest in a month. either way hope this helps.
 
a few growers use hps their entire grow. it shouldn't be a problem. as long as your light schedule stays the same, you'll be fine.
 
yea i meant switch to 12/12 in a month, i edited that (thanks man). I expect to be in the flowering stage for 8-12 weeks like everyone else.

Any other thoughts/experiences with turning on the HPS before 12/12?

i run a 1000w mh/hps switchable system. due to lack of money on this last grow i couldn't replace my mh bulb so i just did this whole grow hps. i am by no means disappointed with the way my plants look now 3 weeks into flower, but they are far less bushy than my last harvest, and a couple of the buds are a little bit skinnier than im used to. colas still look awesome, but there is definitely a reason that people run different bulbs for different stages. like you said though its not really a problem, one does what money permits.
 
The guy at the hydro store told me most people he knows aren't even using hps anymore at all they've all gone back to halides for the entire grow. I know a few oldtimers that have used both and swear by halides. I use a hortilux super hps in flower (me likey) and a ndx halide for veg. im going to do two runs on clones one all the way with hps one all the way with halide to see for myself

most def. I would assume that only MH would yield a bulkier harvest but would probably take a lot longer and the hps would have a smaller yield with skinnier plants. Maybe hps is only used for time efficiency and it's better to just run MH. I'll try to keep up with your results

Not to rain on your parade, but if you hadn't been so eager to drop some vague non useful information, you might have read the next sentence. in short, you are a jackass if you harvest after 4 weeks of flower. and i really dont even know what your getting at by saying you can flower in a month. it doesnt take a month of flower to determine sex, it takes a matter of days. i realize that there are extenuating circumstances for this next statement, but "most peeps" already know the sex of the plant before taking cuttings. thats kind of the point. in all i dont see any benefit or actually any reason for your post. i can only expect that your reply will be just as dimwitted.

I think he meant "you can go to flower after a month of growth once germinated."

I concur! my local hydro shop talked me out of HPS and instead went with full spectrum halide....said that all the local guys are buying them and great results....SO FAR my halide from veg to flower is more than pleasing to me....I BELIEVE him because the HPS i wanted would of cost more...so was just not a sales pitch

why doesent anyone use both im using mh for veg then when light goes 12/12 indroducing the hps to grow room full spectrum is hard to beat plus your plant needs more light in flowering so if you use 400 watt mh for veg then 400 hps + 400 mh more light and full spectrum IDEAL RESULTS you almost recreate the sun and you have all the benifits of indoor end up looking like late planted outdoor plants with that soft full clean indoor look + smell and taste of outdoor
