Any material to make a filter for computer fans ?

Any material that's cheap and we may already have at home to use as a filter ? the computer fans I'm using are 12cm.

I thought tea filters could be used but they are a bit small and may reduce the airflow too much.

use drier cloths, you know those nice smelling scented fabric softeners? should allow the perfect air flow while keeping things smelling good. Use batteries until you experiment with a 9 volt ac adapter. I'm specifically saying 9 volts cause its a rather safe range of voltage for that kind of project. There should be a voltage range on the fan as well, try checking what it is and see if you have any left over ac adapters that match the voltage. 9 volts isn't gonna kill your fan either :P

You can get a pc of filter material used in airconditioners at your local hardware store for a few bucks. Old pantyhose works well too.....

The filter for the air conditioners sounds like a good idea, also crossed my mind to use pantyhose but wasn't so sure about it :) +rep

Go to a hardware store and buy a replacement carbon filter sheet for a cooker/oven hood, same stuff as they use in carbon filters its just in a sheet instead of granules

That's probably the best solution, I saw it somewhere else as well and I'll probably try it. Do you know if it works good for the smell as well ? is there any good/simple way to mount it on the fan ?

It does work for smell but not as efficiently as a filter, you may have to fold the sheet over a few times..

and as for mounting it if it was me if would just make a wooden frame the same size as the fan and attach the filter sheet to the frame kinda like a screen window thing and then make screw holes in the corners to match up with the screw holes on the fan then just screw through the frame, thru the holes in the fan into whatever surface you are mounting it to to mate them all together

I'll have to try it out and see how it works. I'll fold it few times and check the temps to be sure they don't go up :)
