Anyone know anything about laptops?

Im in the market for a new laptop, and Im honestly... completely clueless. The computer I'm on now is a Lenovo Y510, and I was finally approved for a refund, because this thing is a peice of crap. My last laptop was an HP NC series (made by Compaq), and it was decent, but not the best. I'm looking for something under $800 (i know, tight budget), that isnt a complete turd. If I had the budget, it would be a mac, but for 800, a PC will have to do. Can anyone make a suggestion for me? I dont want a Dell, and Im kind of considering another HP after this turd lenovo.

I have a Toshiba Satellite. cost me 1200 $, but they come cheaper.

I never had any major problems, and its fast as fuck. I would buy a Toshiba again.

We recently bought an Acer Aspire 5520. AUD1100. WiFi, Bluetooth, Dual layer DVD, 2 gig ram, 320 gig HDD, AMD Turion 64 x 2 (2.00 GHz), nviia geforce 7000m graphics. It does what we want it to do. Image editing mainly. It's certainly not a gaming laptop though.

I also have a Toshiba satellite. Mine was like $800 about 4 years ago. It's still fast and doesn't give me problems. When it's time to re-up, I'll get another one just like it, just newer.

also, it depends on what you want to do with it. Are you a gamer? If so, you'll want a good graphics card. Are you going to be doing movie making? A lot of office stuff? Think all these things through, compare it to the programs on the laptop in question, and make sure you have enough memory to do all the things you want to do.

i just bought this one about 2 months ago. i paid $750. i can run CRYSIS game engine on it. in low setting, i mean it is a lap top so what do you expect. what do you plan on using it for. everyday stuff, web, RIU, gaming. photos, music. it really makes a difference on the use. i would keep a eye on circuit city. a lot of there stores are going out of business. they should have some steals. just keep in mind that your instore service will be gone when they file. for gods sake dont buy a store warranty it will be no good also.

I mostly just use it for internet browsing and music playing. It seems like every laptop I get starts have glitches, crashing, and slowing down within a few months of buying. This lenovo crashed straight out of the box. Im not looking for anything insane... just some basic web browsing and such.

get a macbook. Microsoft dicked over hp with the roll-out of vista. Hp ordered certain chips that microsoft said were good enough to run vista--microsoft changed some stuff and the chips couldn't handle it---the mid to low end hps are slow as a result.

I have a Toshiba Satelite also. It was around 800. It's s great computer with no problems in 3 years.

Gotta put bells on the Acer. I think you'd be surprised. Also, a little easier to deal with if you like to run Linux instead of Windows, and I don't think they load up, if pre-loaded, with a lot of crapware like Dell does.

I also have a toshiba satelite 4 years off constent use and still going strong. dam looks like everyones got these things, im suprised how fast it is and how much dust and dirt is in the back where the fan is, when i bought it i was warned laptops can have alot of problems hahahah

i hate how toshiba and hp and dell load their laptop's with 40 zillion trial software apps and they all load upon startup as default. Acer is better about not doing that bullshit. Compaq also loads trial software on i think their owned by hp. Also if best buy has a black friday add on a laptop dont go for it it's a fraud. Best buy got kicked out of a few states for advertising things mostly cpu's that they had none in stock or just 1 or two. they sold them for almost nothing and the rest that came all the way to the store to get one will get sucked into buying another one for what is a ripoff.

Where would you recommend buying from?

Also, Ive never heard of Acer... whats their story?

There's a little bit there, but it's all convenience type stuff. Acer have their own portal type app that you can launch different apps from, but that's about all. Easily disable. A fair bit of bloatware (Office 2007 60 day trial and other crap), plus McAfee antivirus suite (will be ripped out by the guts and replaced with NOD32 or Kaspersky).

Acer used to focus on organisations but sell through a lot of dealers now to home users. This laptop is pretty good. I can run a wireless mouse, my USB modem and upload and edit image files and rip music for about three to four hours straight before I have to plug in.
Another deciding factor is that I looked at Toshiba and HP laptops alongside this one and it was a far better deal (and it had an AMD processor).

I'm running a dell laptop(1150) for my dj bussiness, but I've fixed all my computers the way I want them.More ram,bigger faster hdrives ect....ect...Never had any problems with the dell even when running several programs and music all night.Get a cool pad for whatever you buy.Heat is a computers enemy,the one I have has 2 fans.works great.

17" Toshiba Satellite, a bazillion posts later and i'm finally wearing thru the mouse pad. took almost three years of steady use. not 1 single problem, ever.
