Anyone notice this about harvesting too early?

Hi all! a novice grower here. I've been tinkering all my life with plants but really only got semi-serious over the last 7 years or so. I have had some really good grows but I think my biggest mistake has been harvesting too early.

One thing I have noticed from early weed is really bad restless leg/body syndrome around early evening. I ran out of my own flower and bought some from a dispensary. The dispensary weed was equally as potent but with zero restless syndromes. Just wondering if anyone else has encountered this.

I have had restless leg syndrome for at least 20 years and it only happens in the evening but it is just a minor nuisance so do not want to take any prescription medication for it. I do not believe it is caused from marijuana use in my case.

Could be the strain ..?? I get mild panic attacks when I smoke my Rainbow Belts, but nothing else.

I also personally theorize that our own homegrown may be higher in overall cannabinoids and/or terpenes, as it's likely fresher than what the dispo sells.

I dunno. My last run was Mephisto 3BOG autos which is about 15% THC (according to Mephisto anyway). I think the answer is waiting for amber trichs as the effect is more sedating. I'm not certain though.

Is it possible what you are experiencing is the more psychoactive properties of fresh cannabis vs older cannabis?

I am assuming of course that the bought buds were harvested longer ago than your own harvest.
Good point. The last of my stash was in the jar for 6 months. The store bought was much older.

What do you look for?

Trichomes can be tricky to read accurately, especially for new growers since they don't know what to actually look for. It's very easy for the bulbous clear trichome heads to magnify the opaque/cloudy trichome stalks. This is I believe what you are seeing because your trichomes look mostly clear to me.

Determining maturity isn't about one single factor, its about watching ALL the signs the plant is giving you. As you grow more plants you will begin to be able to read those signs, and understand what point your plant is at.

FIRST 90% of the stigma(pistils) will turn red(ish) and begin to actually shrink/shrivel back towards the buds.

THEN the bracts(calyxs) will begin to fatten up internally. The buds won't be appearing to grow much outwardly at this point but will be adding density and weight still. I've watched strong stems bend over in just a couple days during this period from the added mass.

FINALLY after about 2ish weeks of swelling, AFTER the stigma have turned, then you can look at trichomes on the actual buds and determine your final harvest point.

There are plenty of variables that can alter time periods, but for the most part cannabis plants follow pretty consistent patterns of growth and ripening.

It is VERY EASY to harvest a plant too early and loose out on flavor, smell, yield, and overall quality.

It is VERY HARD to harvest too late. I have never seen someone accidentally over ripen a plant, it would take weeks of ignoring your plant for that to happen.

Basically what @bk78 posted. I just skip the looking at trichomes. The overall visual appearance with the naked eye is enough. Trichomes can change for a variety of reasons that are not related to the plant being done and some plants don't amber.

From the looks of those buds in the first photo you posted none of the pistils had started to recede. They would have swelled and gained more density had they been allowed to go longer. That's just my observation from looking at the photo you posted.

Thanks to you and Thundercat. I think I'll wait on my current crop as I think they are probably about 2 weeks away.

I had restless leg syndrome for many years. I was in the hospital about 5 years ago for something unrelated and they noticed my blood was very low in magnesium. I started taking a supplement. I haven't had any RLS symptoms since.
