Anyone tried these USB Microscopes

I saw one of these USB microscopes at the Medical Marijuana Expo here in MI. It was a little more pricey at the show $140 US I think. A great idea though, just out of my budget right now. My $12 scope from Radio Shack will have to do for now.

Radio Shack has a 12 dollar scope? How good is it? 60/100?

I have the radio shack scope and find it hard to use. Unless you want a picture I think the best bet is a real microscope and you can pick up used vintage ones from ebay cheap. They are high school and college scopes from the 50s and 60s and if they are in good shape they are perfect. I recently got a Tasco that is like new for $15.

It is like being in a forest of trichs and the best thing is the large field of view. I can see clear, couldy and amber trichs in the same field of view and it is easy to estimate the proportions of each. Downside is you have to trim off a tiny piece of leaf but that is no harm. Since you should evaluate trichs from several locations around the plant, this makes it easier and more accurate. Look for Bausch and Lomb or Tasco or Spencer scopes. And ask the seller if they work correctly and if they need anything.

Hovering with the Radio Shack scope is a pain. Right when you just start to get things zoomed in and partially in focus presto chango, nothing, nothing at all because you moved or the pressure on the leaf or bud made it move.

What people need to do is snip off a piece of a leaf protruding from a bud or part of one the closest to a bud or nip a small piece of bud and then lay it on a table or counter top or something, something where the color does not make viewing more difficult, and then its easy to use them. If they don’t do that the scope can be a real pain.

They aren’t the best but if someone uses them as I mentioned, for the price it is really difficult to beat them and since many growers are on a somewhat tight budget it can be the best way for many to go.

It sure beats not having any scope at all.

Thank you everyone. A tight budget here, to say the least. Right now I'm using a magnifying glass with a smaller 2X peep hole, whatever that is? For $12. it sounds like it is worth a shot until I can get something better.

Kind of sounds like the theory of my whole grow right now. "Until I can get something better".:leaf:

I agree they work, I just found it hard to use compared to a real microscope. You do have to trim off a piece of leaf and then it is tricky getting it centered and focused and the field of view is still small. For $12 it is better than a loupe. I just wanted to point out that the additional cost of a real microscope might not be near as much as you might think. For example here is one closing in 4 hrs. And despite the description it is not a child's toy. It is well made and will do the job we want for a very long time if cared for.

I have the Radio Shack one already and hate the thing. As mentioned, its hard to get a really good view of the trich's without taking leaves off and stuff. Its also hard to get a good view of the whole plant if you've got more than a few plants. I like the looks of those ones on ebay if i can just scan over a whole plant fairly fast and can even take a few quality pics of the trich's when I feel like it. I just don't know if its just another toy like i feel the radio shack ones are.

robtoker, have you got a pic from your buddy to see the quality of the pictures? It would be great if you did. Thanks!

Hey guys....new to the forum.I know 7 people that have and use the radio shack product. What we have gathered is it is SO much easier to use if you take SMALL chunks of bud off the plant and put it kinda inside the small hole and just put a little strip of clear tape over it so it don't fall out and your good.We pass it around like a fatty so all can check things out.:peace:
