Anyone using organic "hempy bucquets"?

I know hempys are pretty popular and some on RIU use this technique. A hybrid of this method involves a layer of perlite (I haven't seen it used but I am going to try hydroton) about 1" higher than drain hole, then a layer of coco and finally top with your favorite soil.

Does anyone here have experience with this type of set up?

Yup. Organics will work fine. Just make sure you put clay shards, perlite, hydroton or something else on the bottom or the soil will probably wick too much moisture. It only has to go just over the drain hole.

what the point with the soil when there is no soil underneath it will just flush to bottom of hempy and clog all the shot on the bottom

Gold brick, have you tried this method or know anything else about it?

Well the coco is supposed to act like a screen to keep the soil on top separated from the bottom reservoir so the soil is not constantly wet

Soil topping...is adding about 2 inches of soil to the top (I do this on most of my hempy's)

Soil core, which is more what you are referring to....perlite on the bottom for the reservoir (a few inches above the drain hole), then soil to the top

I have not heard of adding the layer of coco, but I'm sure that would work

@WattSaver introduced us to soil capping/core ....I would consider him as one of the pioneers of this style

yeah no problem with it falling to the bottom as long as you put a good layer to buffer in between. I have even poured some teas in there...no root rot or anything. I want the Hempy ease but organic taste.

Exactly my reasoning for choosing this method. Easy upkeep and I dont want any chemicals in my plants. I'm gonna try fox farms ocean forest and I'll be setting rooted clones in 2 liter bottles ( or another suitable container) going straight to 12/12 once they're rooted and healthy so I'm hoping the nutes in the soil will get me a few weeks into flower before I have to supplement. And when I do have to add nutes what sort of organic concoction do you use for teas?

I just bubble up some teas-use a shot glass for measuring and 1 gallon of water-
1 glass EWC
1 glass lobster compost
1/4 glass peat
1/4 glass rock dust
1/4 glass my soil mix
1/5 kelp
A tablespoon of molasses and that's it. Bubble 24-48 hours.

You can use any amount of soil you want from 1/2 to 3/4" above the hole in a hempy bucket. Do cut the soil with some small perlite if you're going to use a lot of soil, it will help with the drainage and the bucket will operate better. With a soil cap adding more perlite to the soil doesn't make much difference. I always start the plants and veg in soil, then transplant into a perlite or coco hempy bucket for the flower cycle, I've never tried an organic bucket, but have thought about getting some super soil and cutting in half with fine perlite and see if it could pull off a full flower cycle.

I have a pseudo help bucket garden for my mothers. In another thread I went over building it in detail.

I use an aquavalve and an external res with the buckets in a tray. Perlite is my medium but they were started in soil so there is some in there.

Soil is fine just keep it above the waterline, it will still whick from the perlite. You could put a bit of landscape fabric down to keep the soil from falling into the perlite.
