Greetings, LED users. I'm curious about getting into the LED game, and have been waiting a bit for something to come along that is powerful, efficient, and isn't going to bankroll me for my small closet grow. I have a 4x2x4 tent that I supplement with 4 PL-L 50W tubes and wanted to toss some LED in there as well for my current and future grows. I've been researching COB's off and on for a few weeks, came across these on the eBay/Amazon, but of course the reviews are too limited to sway me and inform. So, I'm hoping someone here more knowledgeable than I in this area might lend their opinion/expertise/criticisms.

Well your asking the same question I have been searching for the last few days Im intrested in adding supplemental LED to my 4x4 tent With a 600 watt cool tube an as of now I have 3 option in my price range

This seems to be the best priced wattage an output not to sure on the purple spectrum but it should do pretty well in both veg/flower

Option 2 - 315$ for me.is a ds100 and at 300"$ and not cheap but a quality 100 watt light that is good for flower veg an clones wich makes it very useful all though

Option 3 280$ free shipping for me - california light works solar flare bloom booster wich I honestly think will wotk best for what I need but why buy this when the advanced ds100 offers more functionability or the apollo purple sun offers 3x the strength as both the lights im considering an they must be fairly new cant find anyone who has expierience with them yet except those somewhat cheezy fake lookin reviews on amazon! I actually was going.to order this light yesterday but didnt make it to the bank to depoist funds! Hope it will be a great supplemental light with other functionality for veggin etc.next time around!
 
They are calling it a cob, but they are using multichips. You can see the individual emitters as dots

The tech is good but the execution is bad

Hey atomic, I've been looking into LEDs recently as well, but still have multiple questions. So take this as a grain of salt. Or whatever that saying is.

The DS100 looks like a quality light, and was actually going to invest in one, until I saw this video. If sound/stealth is not a concern, maybe it's not a bad light. But it's also $300. And it sounds louder than any inline fan I've seen around here.

I haven't looked into COB LEDs or the solar flare, but the solar flare looks pretty badass. If you're willing to drop some dough, maybe take a look into the A51 RW75 light, or any of the hans panels? And I've heard decent things about BlackDog LEDs as well. Oh and I don't think the COB LED will actually hit the 300W mark.
 
Yeah thanks tree Im not expecting it to hit 300 watts either lol an im extremely shocked the ds100 could be that loud but thats not quite an issue but yah an abput what Petflora said thanks for pointing that out thats a little bit of a red flag in my book. I have looked into blackdogs just pricey but seems you truely get what u pay for in this market unless you have vast amounts of LED knowledge. Will check the 51 out for sure though.

If you buy the cobs. You could swap some parts. Throw in some Cree cxa3050 3000k / 5000k cobs, meanwell drivers, and fans. Then have a much better light that will last longer. Or wait til it fails and do that. You would need 2 of those 4 cob lights to cover your 4x2x4 tent.

if you are not about diy, then 2-3 area 51 rw75 or 2 Hans 65 /80w panels or inda gro 200 would be a be a better option.
 
Note what hyroot said. Upgrade with WHITE cobs not multi-spectrum chips

Mj is a fruiting plant (buds= fruit)

Fruiting plants need a FULL spectrum of light to produce fruit to it's full potential

I suspect that any seeds produced by multi-spectrum emitters will have to be compromised by those missing spectrums

The problems may not show up until 2-3+ generations, but I would not be surprised that genetic mutations will result

Now if you are using some to supplement sufficient white panels, then ok, but why?

All mj needs is WHITE. The only question is "How much cool-neutral- and warm white to use and when?"

with the cobs being so close together. I wonder how much area it would cover with Cree cobs.
 
Just curious whats it take to install drivers an about how much for the.cob replacements u would suggest? Seems replacing cobs are quite simple as of now im still think the ds100 but also considering taking a big chance on something like this http://m.ebay.com/itm/271429041880?nav=SEAR

An you pointed out that full spectrum is much better for fruiting so im guess a full spectrum led is also a really good supplemental for a led
 
Thank you all for the helpful suggestions. The area 51 rw-75 looks like it might be exactly what I'm looking for.

To answer your question PetFlora, it's kind of a two-fold approach. Although there's a good chance it might be a waste of time. I want use half of my PL-L's, introduce some LED's to make up the lumen loss and not add the heat factor since I don't have the option to run nice high CFM fans.
 
If you already have adequate light in a certain spectral range, adding more of IT is likely to cause more harm than good. You need to understand what is missing from said light and only infill with that

Yeah, right now I have adequate light in both 6000k and 2700k. In a month it might be too hot to keep using all of the PL-L tubes however. Leading me to look for a lumen/spectrum replacement for the lumens I'll lose when I take out half the tubes.
 
Just wanted to say thanks for all the help pointing me in the right direction. I ended up going with 2, Area51 RW-75's. I liked the first one so much that I decided to ditch PL-L's all together and got a second RW-75. They are a pretty awesome set of leds and thought I'd share how they came out.
