You think the ammo is cheap just wait until you price the rifles, I got the M44 carbine version with the side folding bayonet for under $80.
I also got a nice WWII 91/30 for just over $100, came with a bayonet, sling, oil can, head spacing gauge/screwdriver and cleaning kit.

Ak 47 or ar 15 for home defense?
I hope you live on a ranch or something. The range on those weapons, and the fact that they are rifle ammunition means that rounds will just keep going and going, down the street and through a couple walls.
If you want home defense you want something short range, that won't penetrate a WHOLE lot of hard targets. If you want a true home defense weapon I'd say you want a pump action shotgun, or a hand gun. With a pump action shotgun you have a nice spread, and given that most home defense shots occur at less than like 30 feet, one or two shots will still do a LOT of damage, and put an intruder down without going and killing your neighbors baby down the street. Handguns are lower velocity, and hollowpoints work much better in 9mm, .40, and .45 as compared to hollowpoints in .223, and 7.62x39 (ask for 7.62x39 hollowpoints and many gun store clerks will laugh at you because it's worthless for expansion).
As far as ar 15 or ak47? I'd say both

ak47 will be cheaper outright, and less expensive to shoot than .223. Case of 1000rds of 7.62x39 is $230 shipped in US, .223 case of 1000rds is something like $400 shipped.
A good (in my eyes) AR 15 will be $1000ish +, with $2000+ for the *butter in your hands* ar15s. The wasr 10 ak47 is like $500, the aresenal (top of the line) ak 47 is about 1100-$1200.

But seriously if your planning on defending a home I'd say this.. $500 or so MSRP.
8+1 12 gague 2&3/4 shells, in your choice of buckshot, or hollowpoint slugs - buckshot can be conveniently purchased for 0.22c a round, in packs of 100 rounds ($20 box at walmart). Hollowpoint slugs are like $10 for 25. Also has a bayonet lug, if your into stabbing things.

Not gonna argue too much but if u wan to put lead down range go with the Ak because you can shoot the dirt nastiest cheapest ammo on the planet and ammo is getting expensive these days. Up here it's 8.99 for a 20rd box of 5.56 NATO and I think it's like 3 dollars cheaper. If I buy .223 rem by the case of some high grade steel case I end up paying about .39 a round vs the 7.62x39 which can shoot wolf and tulammo you might pay 25-30 cents a round. I went a different direction and bought a sig 556
