I've never had issues with starting under HPS, but I get result that are as good with my mixed HO T5's using half the power $$$.

You can start directly under hid lights, the problem comes from going from cfl or other less intense light to hid. Seeds start in full sun all the time most folks choose t5 or cfl for cost reasons but if you start them from day 1 under hid they'll never skip a beat

yes you can no problem,just use common sense..ie the light doesn't need to be as close as youd have it to older plants.
