Are they supposed to smell like hay (day3)

Awesome to wind up here! I'm on day 3 of drying in my tent and my buds went from smelling to smelling like hay, there hanging in my 2x4 with the ac infinity fan and filter combo and speed setting on 4 ( about half power) and a small ocilating fan in the corner not pointing on the buds, now straight hay or grass smell, this is my first harvest and I'm freaking out. Some say more air circulation is needed some say it perfectly normal, that's why I came here, thanks in advance,

Any pics of the plant on harvest day? What kinda temp and humidity are you trying to dry at? Pic of the plant might hold answers.

Might of been a bit soon, i would of left that a couple weeks, I would try and slow the dry down to help get rid of the hay smell, slow dry and cure is your best bet, a wet cut will make it smell like grass/hay as well but in my experience, nice ripe bud never really smells like hay. Looks like nice bud though, just slow the dry down and let that chlorophyll break down. If you dry too quick right now, you won’t be happy at all.

And the temp humidity you listed are not too bad, if you can get it cooler and don’t have too much air flow after a day or so, would be better. I would say at that temp and humidity, you will be drying too quick. I just did some at 60/60 and it was ready for jar in 10 days, I had some break early, dryed it and it was grassy, it has a typical sweet smell now I say is from the early cut, the plant is still going 2 weeks later and it’s finishing week 11 tomorrow, 8 week strain. It’s curing at 60 stable now and is improving.

I assume your fan leaves are still on the plant? If so they have their own smell that is not very good, once you get to trimming the smell comes back some. It kinda goes away again for first few days of cure then comes back when cured up.

No I took off all fan leaves and any that had a stem I could get to, 100% of the sugar leaves are still on, I think I need to slow my fan and filter combo down to 25% instead of 50% I could slow air flow into the tent down and turn my occilating fan off too?

That isn’t contributing to the hay smell. In fact lowering the airflow will make it worse.

That smell as far as I’m aware is the chlorophyll etc breaking down.

If you harvested on time and keep temps and humidity in a good range the smell will come back. Might not be like it smelled when flowering but I always get good smells after drying and curing. If your harvested way too early then that can make for weed that stays smelling like hay or so I've heard.

The only time I had bud that smelled like hay was my very first run and I didn't know what I was doing. The plants were in bad shape when harvested and my temps were over 100 degrees. That has been 16 years ago or so and it hasn't happened since, just required a lot of reading and learning.

Hopefully you already got plants vegging for next run, if so it doesn't take long to get another run in and after a few runs you will have it all figured out.

Ok so my ac was on 65 and staying at 67 I lowered the ac down to 60 to slow the drying process hope tht will help, I went and checked them and its day 4 and they're pretty crispy, and dnt have much smell unless touched but the stems still bend instead of cracking, I hope them being crispy on day 4 isn't bad

You'll be fine. I've had a few (whole)plants hanging for over 2 weeks in warmer temps and they're still not ready for jars. If your buds were ripe, they'll stink when they're dry

I think day 3 of drying is a little early to expect the scent to knock your socks off. With the humidity low in your dry space... the buds will dry too fast and you may not get what you really want if you rush it. I'm going to start my dry at 65%rh and gradually lower it to 58% or 55%.

It's now day 6 and they seem pretty dry so I plucked a bud to see if it would burn in a paper and it burned really nice, so should i jar right now?

In my experience I only got the hay smell from chopping too early out of being inpatient, and wet trimming. During the dry process the smell does dissipate a little bit, but not turn into that infamous
“ hay “ smell. The good smell and flavors soon come back after jarring, and even that has to be done right. Drying and curing is like an art, you have to practice and dial in every aspect to get that perfect product.
