I have the ones that use 5 gal smart pots and even though there's a special root blocking cap you put on the bottom, the roots still seem to grow out of the side of the smart pots above it and down into the water valve area, just today causing the valve to get stuck open and dump the 4 gallons I had in my reservoir all over the floor of my tent. So after multiple grows, I can say I absolutely love the system, but definitely use the kind with plastic pots. I'll be sourcing some that fit before my next grow.

My other experience was that adding any kind of nutrient solution to the reservoir eventually caused some sort of microbial outbreak, despite it being an opaque black plastic, and having an aeration line in there. Now I'm growing using organic dry fertilizer and occasional top dressing with the autopot system just for watering and adding only calmag to the reservoir because I'm growing in coco.

I feed with some hydrogen peroxide every week seems to help keep the system clean
