Anybody have any ideas on a cheap way to rig my 600w HID in my little closet to shut off if the temp gets above, say 85? Seems like a good safety idea to me as my extraction fan sits up in my attic and i'd hate to see what happens if a fan fails and that 600 w sits in my closet with no air flow

You plug your timer into the wall and plug this up to the timer, then you plug your light into it. It will shut off at the high temp you set and it has a restart delay so it won't fuck your bulb or ballast up.
I would set the temp around 90 or 95 at the highest and the delay for 10-15 min.

I've never experienced this, nor have I ever heard of there being an issue with turning the lights off for a few minutes during the on cycle.

Right excessive lighting can cause herms if during dark period it's turning on but if during light period turning off plants could chalk it up to a storm or cloud cover or whatever it shouldn't cause herms by any means

what a lot of people do is have a emergency fan . a big fucker that will suck all the heat out . turns on by thermostat . why only 85 ? i would set it to 95f . 85 honestly is not that hot .

Ya just if your expecting high heat make sure to run silica and co2 if possible because it won't have as harsh an effect.
Im not too worried about hermies but maybe I would set it to go off at 90 or 95, not 85. The only time it should get that hot in my closet would be from a fan failure (at which point im more concerned about keepin things from getting hot then a little bit of darkness). I have a 18 inch oscillating fan on high pointed at the cool tube also, so if my attic fan quits extracting well then the oscillater should keep it cool enough to keep from catching on fire? It might kill the plants but as long as there's no fire I'm still alive.

buy a quality fan . problem solved . a lot of growers have many thousands of dollars riding on a fan or fans . you know the buy ones that have a good rep . why spend 50 or 100 bucks on a auto shut down when you could of got a quality fan ?

Both of you guys are trippin. The purpose of a high temp shut off is for a fail safe. You shouldn't have to fall back on it every day. It's used for the unlikely event that a fan goes out or for some reason the outlet shorts.
It happened to me not too long ago. The wall outlet that I had my exhaust fan to my air cooled hood went out, but the light stayed on. I walked in and it was at 95 degrees! I turned off the light and started troubleshooting the problem.
