Autoflower Thread & Resource Guide

This is the greatest forum on the web. Anyway, I just started my first grow. I am a complete newbie but I did my best to research (this site was very helpful) the best way to grow with the budget and space I have available. Anyway, here's my set up so far:

-I just planted five feminized auto ak47 seeds from dope-seeds.com in five 8-10 liter (not sure of the exact size but they look to be at least twice as big as the 4oz pots they had.
- As this is my first grow I didn't do anything too special with my soil. I went to my local nursery and purchased their premium potting soil http://www.merrifieldgardencenter.com/products.php?pid=1045&openparent=2119 . The listed ingredients seemed to be about right although I don't know the ratios. Even if there is a better soil method out there I figure for my first grow something would sprout.
- I put between 2 and 3 inches of pebbles on the bottom of my pots. I then added the soil mixed with about 30% sand for drainage. Everyone seems to say that the biggest mistake rookies make is overwatering. I figure the sand and pebbles will help me prevent that.
- All five pots are underneath a hydrofarm 250watt hps light. I have it on a timer set to a light schedule of 20/4 light/dark although there are no plants yet.
-In accordance with the instructions on the seed packet I planted the seeds directly into each pot.
-I am growing in an attic in secret. The space is pretty larger although not very tall. Its right below the roof (obviously) so the shape of the room is triangle (like A frame) with the sides meeting at a point at the top. Dimensions: 3.5' high, 12'-14' wide and around 30' to 35' long.

The photos I've seen in this forum show that at least some of you know what your doing. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated. Here are a couple questions about this grow and (hopefully) a second grow starting in a little over a month when I add a second 250watt light to my set up:

1. How long does it normally take for a baby plant to be visible after I plant it. It has been 96 hours since I put the seeds in the soil and I'm starting to get a little worried. I'm also a little worried because after I planted them I read in a guide for the original low ryder to plant the seeds 0.5cm to 1cm below the surface. I used by pinkie but each seed is probably closer to 2cm below the surface. When should I start getting worried?

2. I thoroughly watered all five pots when I planted the seeds. Each pot is still very moist. Darker, moist soil is still clearly visible on the top and feels moist to the touch. Is there any reason I should water more? A lot of people seem to prefer the paper toil method which would seem to be a much moister environment than moist soil.

3. I read that the auto ak47 cam grow over two feet. With the light place at the apex and the plant directly underneath it with some of the ceiling insulation moved aside I can about three feet from the bottom of the light to the soil. What happens if the top of the plant gets within six inches of the light? Will it scorch the plant or anything? Obviously, I've already planted so its too late to switch strains (although my next crop rotation will likely be diesel rider or some other shorter strain) but will it be necessary to move the plants to a taller room for the last couple weeks of the grow?

4. The potting soil has some fertilizer in it to get started. How many weeks should I wait to fertilize. I hear the second most common mistake among rookie growers is over fertilizing. Also, what is a good fertilizer? I figure some sort of liquid fertilizer mixed in with the water would be easiest. Other growers seem keen on sticking to organic soil and fertilizer. I don't really care about using organic anything. I'll use whatever works.

Thanks for your help and if something sprouts I'll be sure to post some photos.

I'm new myself, but from my experience so far is that germinating the seeds before putting them in soil is the best method, but you've already put them in soil so I would say you may have another 2-3 days before you see them sprout. Also I have 3 female autos right now, mixed strains and the first one showed its sex about 17 days after sprouting, and the other two took about 21 days. As far as fertilization, autos seem very picky about it. I currently am using fox farms tiger bloom. Can't say much as I just started doing it in the past week and their looking healthy so far. Oh and I fed at 1/4 of the recommended amount.

Oh I almost forgot, I actually just put two germinated auto's in soil tonight, I'm willing to bet they will be sprouted tomorrow. I just put them taproot down in a little hole and just put a light covered over soil over it and water it. Has worked every time for me so far. I have gotten 4 males however, but the great part is that males show their sex even earlier than the females. I think you said you got fems tho so you should be good anyways.

didnt he say they were 7 weeks old? lowryders are only 8 weeks

look at the old posts

EDIT:

"I have to say one thing NEVER go 12/12 on auto-flowering, waste of money and time. I started in 20/4 for the first 3 weeks, then moved to 12/12 for the rest, and now im at total of 6 weeks, they don't look like they are going to give not even a gram, sucks. Post pics in a bit."

he f'ed up his plants

Oh wow my bad totally. I actually read both posts but somehow ... bongsmiliebongsmilie ... didn't put them with the same person. Yeah I would have to say they are WAY f'ed up!! Too bad for sure, all that wasted space when in 2 months they should have been half as tall and 10x fatter :P I had to put a Diesel Ryder AF on 12/12 to empty one cab and rid it of gnats, but she was 35 days old and raised from seed under a 150HPS. She sure didnt get much bigger once put on 12/12, just fattened up a bit with ZERO branching. I will keep your pic in mind next time I think of going 12/12 in my AF cab :P Better luck next time 420Brazilian!!

Sorry for the mixup Yamato, thanks for correcting me. I should have read back to be sure on that one first :P

Peace KB

1. they can sprout anywhere between 1 -10 days, anything after this it's time to worry. be patient.

2. go easy on the watering, i killed an auto ak47 seed by drowning it! as long as the soil is moist, you should be fine. Learn to judge when to water by the weight of the pot.

3. my ak's grew to about 26", I had a 400w HPS around 6" from the top (with a cool tube though) and they were fine. You can see my grow journal in my sig.
If you can hold your hand over the top of your plants without burning, your plants will be fine.

4. Putting seeds into fertilised soil can be a bit risky, they really don't need nutes for the first couple of weeks. If you start to see brown spots on your leaves, give the soil a good flushing.

and finally, when they sprout, start a grow journal so people can advise you along the way.

best of luck to you, auto ak's are great!

yo yub they look a lil stretched maybe you should switch the bulb what kind is it? mine stretched out a bit but the stems are getting fatter now and the leaves are getting nice and big as for your seedlings they look fine just a lil elongated and they look maybe 3-4 days old maybe? not sure

yea they are hitting their 3-4 day. that's what i thought cause they have reallllyyyy long stalks for some reason. I have no idea what kind of bulb because I was planning on using sunlight for outside grow, but then its been raining for a while now, so I've been forced to use my lamp light....

the leaves are growing pretty well in my opinion i checked them today and they are still green and the serrated leaves are growing to be about the same size as the cotyledons. So whats the problem with the stalk?

and the stalk is really not that strong....it waves around if you touch the bottle.

hey yub its more likely the bulb your using thats causing the stretching switch the bulb out its causing the seedling to grow more of a tall stalk which could lead to a weaker plant later on that wont be able to support itself and use wind stress to make it grow a bigger and stronger stem

so the stems are about 4 and half inches tall. now is that really tall? and what kind of lamp should i get? I actually have a flourescent not sure of the wattage or lumens or whatever. but should I change? and is there a particular direction for wind stress?

ATX YOU ARE A LIFESAVER!

when i found out mine where stretching they where a lil above 2.5 inches tall and where looking too thin 4 inches is pretty stretched out you should measure them to be sure try to get a cfl for the desk lamp that is high watts try to find one more than 25watts and for the kelvins or "k" to be 5500k or 6500k if you dont know what it is i would change it cuz it could be whats causing the stretching and for the wind stress use a oscillating fan on them but dont leave it on all the time the plants dont like too much air to be moving around to much and the stem is weak right now you dont want to break it either leave it on for 15-30mins and turn it off i did this and my babies are doing way better now the stems are sturdy and dont move around when i pick up the cup and no problem just tryin to help out a fellow grower :bigjoint:

you should post a pic up and cflis compact fluorescent light its the light bulbs that are twisted the wind stress is good but you dont want to to it too often 15 mins live every hour or so and not right on them either and at a low speed

Honestly, every grow I have done so far has had a 4" high velocity (non oscillating) fan from walmart blowing on them at all times. I just make sure that its not blowing too hard on one plant causing it to bend over. Not only does having a fan going all the time help fatten the stalks more, it stirs the air in the cab nicely so the air doesnt become too still or hot.

The stalks on my 2 largest plants are bigger than my fat thumb at the base, and they have had a fan on them since about day 14.

yubinator said:
shit. they are really wobbly I guess I should def do the wind stress. As for the lamp...whats cfl?
As far as CFL lights go, the best place to get them without buying online is home depot or any hardware store. Usually the hardware stores carry the 42w CFLs that are 2700k and great for flowering. Home depot carries a 68w 2700k CFL for $15 that is amazing, but the size of a football. As far as what lights to use for the beginning of your plants life, I would use a couple 26w 6500k (Daylight) bulbs from walmart or a hardware store mixed with a 42w 2700k (Warm White). If you are able to order online, 1000bulbs.com is the best place to go, they have EVERYTHING! Just make sure to get the compact flourescent bulbs (CFLs) that look like this:

Hope that helps, and good luck!!

Or if you want to get a real CFL designed for growing, these Envirlites are pretty cheap; £30 for my 200w.
They come in various wattage / colour spectrum - 125w - 250w. Blue (vegging) or red (flowering)
Give ebay a search for envirolite.

here are the 3 ak's that i am growing. first two are similar height and similar growth stage. the third is about a day to two days behind but it seems like its going to do the same thing and stretch. so i have the fan on for a while, i think ill leave it on for a while cause the plant number 2 is reallyyyyy bending at ease. the first isn't, its becoming more sturdy i think, and the third is a rock as it just sprouted. as for the light, it looks just like that one above. i'm definitely going to have to get a new light...

this is alot harder than i thought it would be :(

yea they are really stretched out dont worry bro its not hard its that you wernt prepared for a indoor grow thats all its a learning experience if all fails scrap the grow and start over again when your prepared also make sure the light is really close like 2 inches from the tops of the plants cfl's have to be close to the plants for them to get the most out of them

yubinator

alright, are there different lights i can use that don't have to be so close and i could use as lamp light? and what else can i do to stop the bending, stretching, weak stems etc besides wind stress and stronger light? anything else?

oh by the way, i got a free cali hash seed with my order, and i germinated using paper towels, but i didn't prepare another 16 oz soil container, so i was just gonna throw it out but low and behold, its growing between the paper towels...its already got its first set of leaves, and the roots are like...becoming part of the paper towels :O i was amazed. So i'm letting that happen, see if i can grow a plant between paper towels and water and eventually some nutes

when do you transplant to a bigger container?

atxbudgrower

Active Member
depends when you want to im transplanting when mine show what sex they are which should be next week i think mine are going to go into 3 gallon grow bags and for letting the seedling grow between the towels i dont think the bigger roots will make it between them and become root bound and be a small plant im not to sure but thats what it seems like to me
