Autoflowers, The good and the bad

I'm starting a new thread because ive got a lot of bad reviews on autoflowers and id like to share my experience with you guys.

I've been growing autos for a little over a year now and ive grown dozens of different strains. My first experience with autoflowers i was a little disappointed. It took me two months to grow from seed to bud but i had these little ass 6-7 inch plants with barely any bud. I was growing in 1 gallon pots. After much research i realized that since i was transplanting and growing in such small pots i was stunting the growth of the plants. Autoflowers have a predetermined life span so if its supposed to go from seed to bud in 70 days, if you transplant and shock or stress that plant its going to interfere with its grow cycle.

So finally after i reallized what i was doing wrong i immediately fixed the problem, i started growing in 3 gallon buckets and i stopped transplanting them, i just put them straight into a 3 gallon and let it do its thing. I got much better results this way, i wasnt getting the yield i hoped for but still it was pretty decent for an auto. I had almost given up hope completely, im like these autoflowers are a waste of time and the smoke isnt really that good either. (By the way i was growing New york city auto at the time from pyramid) So after i harvested my plants from my 3 gallon buckets i was anxious to see what my yield was, i was getting anywhere between 15 grams to a little under a ounce from these autos. Which isnt bad when your growing 20 of them but still it could and should be better when you factor in light, bucket size and many other things.

By this time i had completely made up my mind that i wasnt going to waste any more time with autos, i was getting low results with mediocre smoke. The only thing that impressed me was the time frame on the autos, i could practically have a harvest once a month when bud grows that quickly. I wanted to give them 1 more go, i picked different strains this go around, i wanted to pick some of the ones with the highest "Tested" thc content and with the highest yield. So i chose 3 different strains and i got them all from single seed centre. I went with the Afghan kush Ryder from worlds of seeds , Ak-49 from vison and northern lights from speed seeds.
They all ranged from 20-23% thc content and i thought this was pretty high for an auto.

I decided to grow the Afghan kush ryder in 7 gallon geopots, i put the ak-49 auto and northern lights in 5 gallon home depot buckets and i drilled holes in the side to mimick air pots and maybe stop plant circling to allow better root growth. I upgraded my light system, i was using 400 watt mh to veg and 600w hps to flower, im still using 400w to veg but now i use 1000w to flower. After germination i had a total of 22 seeds that germinated, 7 afgan kush ryder, 9 ak-48 and 6 northern lights. I fed regularly, once a week, i also watered once a week as well, i tried to give at least 3-4 days in between watering because i came to realize that autos love a wet/dry cycle. I used Foxfarm grow big, fox farm tiger bloom, molasses, rhino skin for these super thick ass stalks and branches im loving, cali mag of course and few other Humboldt county nutes.

I'm not 65 days in and im surprised like a motherfucker i must say! I dont know if its the different light or the bigger containers but i must say i have autos now that are about 3-4 feet! and surrounded in resinous buds, I have a few ak-49 plants that i can say without a doubt that ill be pulling more than 2 ounces, the afghan kush plants are about 1.5 feet tall but super bushy the whole plant is practically one huge bud, im starting to see the very dark red hairs appear, im very anxious for this batch to be done. As said before i have 22 autos growing and if my calculations are correct ill be pulling 2-3 pounds just from the looks of it. I could be wrong but i grow normal strains to and i must say the buds on the ak 49 plants are much bigger, the afghan kush ryder buds are bigger than my hand. Ive completely regained hope with these autos and when i chop in 15 days ill give you guys the final update with pics and everything! The ak49 will be my best yielder by far. They say its one of the stronger autos so im hoping its some good bud.

Leave me some feed back and let me know what you guys think!20150325_141917.jpg

I'm no expert by any means. But if you ever want to change it up and kick some ass in your weight of your autos try canna coco. The only thing with it is you use a lot of nutrients and you have to water daily or every other day for sure, and every time you water you use nutrients.
But....... the great benefit is with only 5 plants I yielded 3 lbs.

I just finshed up a Mephistos Fantasmo Express, taken around 85days and I easily got 3.5 to 4oz off of her, I grew in canna coco with the canna line up and she was a beast! I've also had a buddy grow an auto strain I was working and he yielded 403g dry! From 1 plant (granted this dude got mad grow skills will take some time to locate the pic but I got one of her as well) here is the Fantasmo express on chop day.....
Try some of Dutch passions autos they have crazy ass yield potential!

Some of the fattest colas I have grown were on autos and the potency was tops too.
If you want a real potent tasty auto try Ultraviolet by Samsara Seeds
I believe this photo was La Diva by Delicious Seeds (these were all over the place as far as structure)
Mine were grown under Inda-gro 420Par with no pontoon

I think auto's are a great tool to have in your arsenal. Perfect for those just starting out and also a good choice if your growing in a space where "lights out" temps drop too cold.
That is the case at my location so what I have been doing is circulating the air that is warmed up by the lights in my veg box through my flower box to keep the temps up to an acceptable level.
I think I might start running a couple auto's in my veg box to basically make the whole operation a zero cost adventure.
I have a batch of Mikromachine Auto from Kannabia running in my greenhouse right now. Will be interesting to see the outcome!

You live in a cardboard box or something? A hut in Siberia? lol No but for real what is "too cold" for lights out and what makes them easier?

This idea of them being easier for newbs or even being a "tool" is laughable..

You clearly don't know too much about living on the coast in the pacific northwest. Being may 1 we are still seeing night time temps in the mid 40's
I am not an expert on cannabis grow temps but from what I have seen myself I would say that temps below 60 during lights out are counter productive to forward motion in your grow.

Yes, they are easier - no "when should I flip" or any of that. Heck, you don't even need a light timer. Just plug it in and watch them do there thing. No training, topping, etc either.

12/12 from seed sounds great and all but I have had strains (photo's from seed) that even after a 3-4 week veg were not mature enough to go into flower.
Auto strains do their thing as predicted

And here is a little "tool" for you - Delicious Seeds La Diva

I figured talking about "lights out" you were referring to indoor.. Even in the middle of winter most peoples living quarters are warm enough to not necessitate growing autos.. But if you're living in a cardboard box with no insulation and it's mid 40's outside, it would be mid 40's inside and you might need to pull out those autos you were saving for a rainy day..

And I grew an auto that looked way better than that (where the swollen calyxes champ? jp).. And smoked like you rolled up some tulips or something
