Auto's life-cycle

Hardening off plants basically is getting them to adapt from an indoor grow setting to an outdoor. If you just throw in into the sun after being under CFLs for a month you will stress the plant. I'm not an outdoor grower, but if I was I would favor growing indoors during the seedling phase because it's a vulnerable stage of the plants life and there are so many dangers for small plants outside.

While an auto will grow regardless of the about of light hours anything below 18 hours will severely reduce it's already small yield. More light=more growth and vice versa for autos. Most breeders recommend at least 20 hours of lights. So basically it'll grow, but not a lot. Have you looked at 12/12 from seed? Most autos finish in about 10-12 weeks, around the same time most 12/12 from seed grows finish. As far as size goes you can always supercrop/LST/trim/etc a plant that grows too big for you.

Thanks cloudz, but as i said before, growing indoors is not an option other than for the next month, so starting something 12/12 from seed is not feasable. I think ill just google some advice on moving from indoor to out. Thanks for the help

Nice post the3timER. I was just going to start my bloom this week as my plants are starting there 4th week tomorrow, but after reading im going to wait until the 5th week. Give them more time to grow because they've been almost doubling in size every week!! I have 15 auto's outside right now. 5 blue myistic, 5 northern lights and 5 bubblicious, all from nirvana seeds. This is my first year growing auto seeds and i must say there doing great! Each section of the plant has many, many hairs and each plant is about a foot and a half tall. So do my plants sound good to start bloom on there 5th week? I have bud candy from advanced nutirents

Oh yeah and there are outside, all in 5 gallon buckets, holes drilled in bottom for drainage

Here is my Short Rider from Nirvana at 55 days old. It's doing ok. Hoping it just keeps on packing on the weight. She's filling out nicely, but I want her to be fucking OBESE!!! Like, have to sit in two chairs obese... like had to switch to stretchy pants years ago Obese. Looks like I've still got a couple, if not a few, weeks left to get her chunky. Will be flushing sometime next week I think....

Deserves a bump for sure.

Another common question I see is when to switch autos from veg to bloom. Many people are under the impression that as soon as they see the first flowers it's time to switch. Perhaps a little explanation of the life cycle of autos will help to clarify this.

Weeks 1 - 3. Once you've started your seeds and they break the surface of the soil, they are in their seedling stage. The first set of leaves to appear will usually single fingered, followed by a second set that may still be single fingered or perhaps 3 fingered. Once that second set appears growth will start to accelerate as the new leaves provide more photosynthesis. This process will continue, more new leaves, faster growth. Depending on the type of soil in use, mild vegetative nutes can be introduced at week 2. By week 3 most plants will start to show their sex. Males will start to produce pollen sacks and females will display pistols.

Weeks 4 - 6. The plants are now entering a pre flowering stage. During this time the plants should exhibit explosive growth, often as much as a new set of nodes and 1" vertical growth a day. This is the time when they will gain most of their vertical height. Many people make the mistake of switching from vegetative to flowering nutrients at this point, assuming that since they see flowers it must be the proper time. This is incorrect. If the switch to flowering nutes is made at this time the vertical growth will stop and the plant will put it's energy into producing buds. If you need to keep your plants small, or want them to finish earlier, they by all means switch nutes at this point. But if you want to get the most out of your plants continue feeding vegetative nutes until you see the vertical growth slow and stop. Depending on the strain that will usually be sometime during week 5 or 6.

Weeks 7 - 9. By now vertical growth has stopped and the switch to flowering nutrients has been made. The buds will start to fill out and put on weight, becoming hard and tight. Pistols will start to change from white to brown, orange, red, etc. By now the plants will also have developed a strong smell. Toward the end of this phase the large primary and smaller secondary fan leaves will begin to turn yellow. This is an indication that the plant is moving toward the end of it's life.

Weeks 10 - 11. At this time flowering nutes should be discontinued and only plain pHed water fed to flush the remaining nutrients from the soil and improve the taste. Yellowing of the fan leaves will continue as the plant draws the stored energy from them. Eventually they will die and fall off. By the time that the smaller leaves that come from out of the buds will also start to turn yellow. Then it's time to harvest.

I know that many of you are thinking that the seed bank said the plants will finish in 8-9 weeks, so why are you saying they take 10-11? The claims made by the seed banks are somewhat deceptive. If you switch to flowering nutes at week 3 or 4 the plants can finish in the times the seed banks say but they will remain small and not reach their full potential yield. Years of growing by myself and others has shown that autos do best if you follow this time line.

Of course, there will always be variations depending on the strain, the environment, nutrients, etc. This information is meant to only serve as a general guideline.

This was taken from someone who know's their auto's, it helped me alot with growing them and getting decent yeilds...
I know where this comes from and its not quite accurate when i pointed out the flaws in it was one of the reasons i was band from the site
even though he pm'd me a few times for advice

This article helped me quite a bit as I am new to growing and this is my very first grow. I'm growing auto blue mystic and I'm at week 12 now. I'm using a hydro system and my plant is still sucking up water like there is no tomorrow or so it seems and using a microscope i have looked at the trichs and some are red, while others are clear, but not very clear. I don't want to harvest at the wrong time but it seems like it has been forever waiting on this very first grow. Can someone take a look at my cola and tell me what they think ? Am i ready to harvest, how much longer should i wait, etc ? I switched over to just plain ph water about a week or so ago.

I had a similar problem with 2 of my auto NLxBB had 5 going and a free seed auto jack Herer 3 of the NlXBB finished in 70 days Two are very sativa dominant I had to force them into flower I put them in darkness for 2 days this did the job for me. They are at 85 days and are just ready another 5 or 6 days But even though they went much longer they are 2 of the frostiest girls I have seen in a long time. They also turning a nice purple on top of the main cola. Try the 12/12 for a few days that should kick start them I think you will be very happy with the end result
