cool, How much light would it take to grow an avo tree indoors?
I'd like to do some HID growing in plain view with legal plants, in my living room.
Maybe a 150watt MH?

I've started one with 3 toothpicks in the side just enough to hold it up and it took around 1 month maybe up to 2 months to sprout.
back in the late 70s my folks used to grow em , thats how i remeber then startin em, with toothpipcks like you jus said

I'm pissed.
I planted those two pits in pots yesterday and I go out this morning to find they had been dug up and gnawed on by squirrely squirrels. They were lying out of the pots about a foot or two away. I replanted them straight away - some of the roots were damaged.
I hope they make it.
Well, if I run out of guacamole, I can make some squirrelymole.
First off Pip, I'm surpriseed you have Avocados. Somewhere along the line I got the impression you lived in the midwest but whatever, my bad.
If you have avocados and like to eat avocados then the next thing you need besides an Avocado tree is a pellet gun. I would never get to eat Avocados without one.
My dog used to walk around the yard with an Avocado in her mouth and a dirty nose all the time and we now have several trees tha "Bugsy" planted. It can't be that hard if a dog can do it so keep on trying and remember, If a dog can do it then so can you!! Good luck

Naw dude, you could find out where I am if you do some diggin' :-P. The old property we used to have such a squirrel problem they would be eating them out of the trees. This time the avocado is close to the neighbor's yard and their dog barking up the tree keeps them away :hump:

edit: lolz I tried to PM you, BUT YOU DON'T HAVE ANY ROOM!!!

My pits won't sprout! AHHH it's been forever lol

Also with my first seed I found that the water eventually turned murkey and I think had some kindof underwater mold like stuff growing through it...

How much heat do they need will they sprout in 70F?

Depends on the variety. Some are cold tolerant and will sprout no problem regardless. I sprouted mine in the house at 75F.

Yeah, those last two I showed are just getting started - no real vigor from them, weird. I potted up the seedling and it is taking off - pics later.

Hi all,
Is there a possibility that the avo wasn't mature enough for the seed to sprout. FWIW...I have had some pits that would not sprout, too. Just keep trying. Eventually, one will pop for you.

Oh oh...another "When I lived in HI" story...

You didn't want to wander the avo forests w/o a helmet when they were in season. Great big red/purple ones. Don't know the variety. But like all fruit/vegs, gettin' 'em "vine ripe" and they are the best you will ever have.

Word - I jokingly told my friend we could use the hard avocados as projectiles - aerodynamic too. I did take a squirrel out with one that it had gnawed on. Then we shot a few more for the mulligan stew. Mmmmm tasty.

They just got rid of all the coconuts in my town - lawsuits due to death from above. What I don't understand is why they put royal palms in instead. Those fronds dropping are just about as dangerous as a coconut. I guess you can hear the frond falling. I've dodged a few before.

My pits look mature... about an inch and a quarter wide

But also I live in Canada and these avos come from mexico, so they pick them quite immature so they are just ripening up in the stores. Don't know what variety this is, is there a particular variety most common to mexico?
