Baby plants yellowing on leaves

Hey everyone!
Im sure this will annoy the shit outta u, but im a little over worried at times and a total noob :)

Ive got a 5 week old Purple Haze plant (bag seed - meant to be purple haze) growing under about 63W of CFL bright white lamps. They're probably between 2 and 3 inches from the plant. The plants are small for their age but im just playing around/ trying my best with what ive got. The plant is in a small box lined with foil. I water every 2 - 3 days with about one cup of water (bottled).

The leaf tips are yellow and curling down, even the newest growth. After a while the tips turn brown and die, it doesnt seem to spread and new groth comes out every 3rd day or so.

I started with nutes about a week ago (6:3:4 pellet herb fertiliser i stole from my moms place) but i started after the problem had come up. I thought the nutes would help but even the newest leaves came out with yellow tips immediatelyDSCF2703.jpgDSCF2705.jpgDSCF2704.jpg

What is going on?? Any help appreciated :)

Btw the medium im using is just some good ol compost from a compost heap up the road. It was free and looked like really good shit. Water runs through it very easily, even just one cup of water and its running out the bottom of the pot. Could this be a factor?

Looks like she is hungry, those pellets your using are very slow release. But the thing that gets me is that if its in compost then there should be ample food in there for a smaller plant. Are you sure its compost?

If I was you then I would transplant into some soil that you know exactly whats in it... That soil looks RUFF

Yeah its compost like from a big heap. When i started feeding it nutes, i crushed some up and mixed it with water and fed it, that should have been taken up pretty quick right? Yeah the soil looks rough in the pictures, thats just some big stuff on top, below that is some proper soil like stuff. ive been thinking of transplanting anyway

I would get rid of the pellets and get some liquid food. Is there any hydro stores that you can go to?

Not that i know of.... there is a big nursery up the road tho, im sure they'll have stuff i need. Problem is, im in South Africa and half the nutes, soil etc u guys talk about we dont get out here. Most likely got the equivalent just gotta look around

Could it not be burn from my three lamps?? I know CFL's are cool and burning isnt too much of a worry but they're close and the box is wrapped in foil? Doesnt feel too much warmer in there than room temp, i rate about 28C (82F), but maybe the lights are too close?

that does not look like compost...looks more like mulch...we have mulch piles around here of chipped up yard waste...which probably doesn't have shit for nutrients in it, and the PH is probably way off...if it was burn from your lamps you'd see it on the top leaves, not lower ones...

in a nutshell...you dont have a heat issue you have a wtf did you plant that in issue lol :D

Haha ok thanks, i am a first timer after all.
Only thing is like i said, even the newest leaves have yellow tips, u probably cant see it in the photos but its happening. As soon as they're big enough to see u can see the yellow tips. Still a medium problem u rate?

Wow your worlds away lol well welcome to the wonderful world of gardening. Usually with yellow leaf tips it means that they are slightly overfed. To be honest I would get some high quality soil and food. I know this sound crazy but if you can go to your nursery and see what foods and soils they carry then we could recommend what would work best for you

and get rid of the tinfoil, doesn't help and sometime can create "hotspots" but that's not your problem. I would say that that's not anything that your lights are creating. You soil is the culprit in this one

Hahaha i am far away right? U wouldnt believe the culture out here tho, its a massive market and ever since about 20 years ago we've been getting some really dank international shit and some big growers too.

Ok rad thanks for the help, ill get to the nursery asap, maybe u could just give me a basic outline of what im looking for instead of me giving u a huge list of whats available?

Thanks again guys :D

there is organic and chemical.. depends on what you want, but for your veg cycle you want something that is a little higher in nitrogen like 6-4-4 something along those line and for blooming you want your number something like 6-6-8.. People tend to overdue the p with numbers like 0-50-0 and recent studies are showing that plants don't use as much P as these food companies are adding to their foods

This is what compost should look like:

finished-compost-02.jpg

^^ rich beautiful full of nutrients

This is a picture of Mulch:
p_BlackGorillaMulch.jpg

Notice the major differences there? Compost is broken down plant/organic matter, while mulch is pretty much comprised of tree/bushes shredded up...if you are looking to use compost hell make your own! Leftovers from meals that are from plants throw it in a pile and rotate it around, spray it with water, repeat...awesome stuff :D

Just run down through the newbie guides a bit and you'll see what you are looking for in growing medium + nutrients bro :D

Compost is great if it's real compost... I use promix which has nothing added to it and you know exactly what your feeding your plants and how much. I would also recommend getting some dolomite lime to add to the soil and that will keep your ph in check for your whole cycle. A 30-40 lb bag is around 5 bucks and works wonders.

the only thing I don't like about soil with food added is by the time you notice that your plants need more food then your def has already got a foothold on your ladies and then you have to take the time correcting the def. Thats why organic is good cause it's hard to burn, slower releasing and feeds your ladies longer. Chemical foods usually are readily available and have to "usually" be used every feeding

Ok awesome thanks guys, much appreciated. I think ive got some plain old potting soil my mom uses for her veg/herb garden. Think that'll do the job?
