Backyard shed questions.

I was thinking of moving out of my closet and into a backyard grow shed. Somewhere around the size of a 8' x 8'. Was wondering if a "lung" room is necessary to put all the dehumidifiers and ac/heating in? Anyone have any pics or links to share so I can steal some ideas?

That’s a large space. No need for a lung room as you should have plenty of space for A/C and dehumidifiers

How do people handle venting? Should an inline fan be running 24/7 venting outside? Seems like it would be difficult to keep up with heating/ac during very cold/hot months.

If its not sealed, you will get passive air intake. You should be ok with a radiator or something while the lights are off during cold months.

Edit: Forgot you arent insulated. Good luck if you have snow.

You need to insulate and somewhat seal it up, will be massive light leaks if you don't. Also pests galore

How cold does it get there? here in maine you need a lung room to heat the air before it enters the grow. You cant bring in 0 degree air into a 75 degree room with out problems.

I’ve seen some sheds pretty close to the house, not sure about yours but if it’s close your house could possibly be the lung?

The thing about out building grows is, unless you take measures, you will bring in pest on your shoes.
If you have to walk from the outside directly into your grow, you will eventually drag in a hitch hiker or two with you and they will multiply. I know because I lived it for years. Non stop fighting pests. Consider making a buffer area where you can change into grow room only foot wear/ clothing. Best of luck with your build!

if you put s bunch of money at it can be done. Insulated, heat/ac dehu. Filtered intakes, co2 for sealed months. Then power to run all this stuff plus your lights.

I'm currently running a 7'x8' shed with 8' ceiling. It's fully insulated with an ac, dehuey, huey, heater, co2, exhaust fan and electric intake dampers-- allows the system to run sealed or open... depending on weather. All controlled with an arduino, some relays and sensors. The shed itself is the lung room, so to speak. Inside the shed I have a 3.3' x 3.3' tent with an ac infinity 6" fan (also controlled by the arduino). Next to the tent, on the other side of the environmental devices, is where I veg, clone, grow, etc. The tent fan is always running at 1 speed and ramps up if humidity is high and slows back down when it's low. I set it up so it's speed doesn't change depending on temps.

My lights turn on at 9:00PM and turn off at 9:00AM. My temps are always stable within 2 degrees F. I'm in SoCal, so we get some 100*F+ days, and this shed does fine. I use a 5000btu window banger.

Make sure to place the shed in as much shade as possible. Use white paint (I used ceramics added to the paint as well) to reflect radiant heat. I used OSB with the radiant shield on the ceiling as well.

To help with pests I cleared away as many plants as I can from around the shed and routinely spread neem/karanja on the path to the shed. My intake dampers have filters to prevent any bugs from getting sucked in.

I was thinking about adding one of these to the floor right by the door:

My shed is 9 x 7.

There is fiberglass insulation between the studs and the interior walls are drywall.

I've got a mini split AC set up and a dehumidifier in there.

I don't vent, I don't want to send my temp/humidity treated air right out the window. I've got a fan/filter scrubbing the air.

Sometimes moths fly in in the night so I spray Bacterial Thuricide (caterpillar spray)

I grow in an outdoor shed ~10'x12', year round. I love it. I check my grow room maybe every other week. Everything is automated (I use a raised bed with blumats). I've been using it the past 2 years and have had very minimal issues. I was updating a grow journal when I first made the room. I would recommend using the shed if you don't have a spare room and plan on having a sealed room eventually. Totally do-able.

Ive got a 15 x 10 with a loft I thought I could grow in. But then I would have to clean it out and empty it...screw that!

Currently running in an unconditioned garage. Some interesting hurdles with both hot and cold months

Same bro, I got an oversized shed that used to house goats. Got rid of them, put up insulation and drywall and its been a fairly easy spot to grow cannabis year long. Only a few instances of PM and thrips, but I attribute it to being in contact with my outdoor plants at the time. There's mildew all over a bunch of the native outdoor trees/plants/leaves during summer, gotta be careful not to brush up against too many things when walking out to the shed.

Love all the advice. I ended up deciding against setting up a grow shed. The big one for me was having to deal with bugs. Only took a few stories about tracking in bugs to make me want to go another route.

I’m in an Uninsulated double tin shed. I built stud walls the size of a flower and veg room and insulated both including the roof. Then put in another insulated “fake” stud wall with a small walkway to box it all in, and added a door.
I have an outtake fan on constantly wich creates enough passive air intake and run 2x 600w HPS cooltubes and a barebulb 400w MH between the two.
I imagine LED come summer would be a wise choice, as winter I have no problems but come summer, I shut down and grow a crop in the garden as I can’t beat the heat and it’s FREE!

I’d move back into the spare room of the house in a heartbeat given the choice, but kids need bedrooms I suppose haha.
