Bad cigar day

my dad let me hit a cigar when I was 13.. coughed alot and got laughed at by his friends lol.. I never thought much of them. But reading the first post, man, you've got a passion for cigars and I really hope you get a streak of fine smoking cigars.

Now I wanna try a few cigars, any suggestions on where to start?
I could give you recomendations on brands and sizes but that wouldn't be fair. What I can do is give you a general list of tastes.

Toasty
meaty
floral
leather
loam
peppery
cinamon
clove
salty
bitter
chocolate
citrus
coffee
Cherry

Start with those - there are a multitude of others, some more imaginary than others, and those are the flavors that are generaly attractive, others not so attractive are metalic, grassy, sour, stale and the like.

Go to a GOOD tobacconist, he will be the one who sells only tobacco and tobacco implements, few if any glass pipes and powder bullets and the like. Many simply have walk in humidors and don't know what they are doing. If you see a SINGLE flavored cigar or flavored tobacco in the same humidor with the regular cigars - go somewhere else.

Tell him you are new, you want to try a variety of mild to medium smokes of short duration and let him suggest a few. Get no more than two or three and keep them in a double ziplock bag. Even then, you are going to have to smoke them in the next few days.

1. Never EVER inhale a cigar
2. Ensure a well trimmed "head", you don't bite the tip off, you clip it or use a hole punch or a v punch
3. Toast the cigar, that is, flame the foot (the open end) all around, gently so as to begin the charring process uniformly on the foot
4. Put it to your mouth and fire it up - as lightly as possible but be SURE that all of the foot is ignited. You will see smokers rotate their cigar for a moment in the flame, then look at it as they blow, to see that is is completely lit. Then they take a draw or two and wait a moment for things to settle.
5. Puff slowly, don't keep the smoke in your mouth and don't overheat the cigar by "stoking" it, or puffing and puffing in order to get it hot
6. Smoke it until you don't enjoy the flavor any more
7. When you are finished, don't EVER butt it out like a cigarette - it will go out on its own quickly enough. If you butt it, your wife or girlfriend and you yourself will object to the stink. If you let it go out on it's own you will not get such a smell.

Try your best not to have to re-light your cigar. a relit cigar will never taste quite as good, a good cigar will keep lit for several minutes. The tobacco will become stale very quickly after it has been lit. I know people who will smoke the same cigar for several days - YUCK. I have given exquisit cigars to people who will re-light them over and over again, becoming involved in anything but the cigar - I will not give them good sticks after that.

finally, pay attention, tend to the feeling it gives you of peace and tranquility, pay attention to the texture of the smoke and note how the smoke tastes, both on the puff, on the exhale and finally on the finish - you will be surprised at the number of subtle and often surprising flavors. If you get an entertaining cigar, those flavors will change througout the course of your smoking experience - these are usually expensive cigars. If you get a single note cigar, you will find that the core flavors will persist throughout - this is often perferable when one is combining a cigar with a good drink or when one is enjoying the cigar while.. say... posting on a web site.

I have convinced many people of the pleasures of a good cigar, I hope I have convinced you as well.

One more thing - a machine made cigar is NOT a cigar, it is a glorified cigarette, nothing wrong with them, they serve a purpose but never confuse the two, if there is any paper, or reconstituted tobacco in your smoke, it is not the thing I am talking about but a completely different animal.

Haha duck..I didn't know,I was 18..still a novice when it comes to stogies..probably allways will be..I like the smell burning sigars have, but don't like to smoke em..
Canndo..15 south of my home starts the 'tobacco belt'..feilds of tobacco miles wide!! I've allways wanted to get a huge leaf and roll up a nice blunt, but,I think there is a law about having the leaf without a permit..idk..I doubt its quality tobacco, most likely for rj reynolds and his buddy phillip morris...
Some of the finest cigar wrappers in the world are connecticut shade. Cigarette makers will not buy such grades because they are very expensive - and they don't have enough natural nicotine in them to suit. Of course the cigarette folks also treat their tobacco with ammonia in order to alter the nicotine to be more rapidly absorbed.

The process with cigar tobacco actually destroys much of the nicotine in a cigar. I remember when they used to claim that cigars were infinately worse for you than cigarettes by extrapolating the weight of the tobacco in a cigarette, taking the mg of nicotine from that weight and then using the weight of a cigar - giving you, like two GRAMS of nicotine in a large cigar. Doesn't work that way.

If you DO get a fine leaf, there is more to it than simply rolling it, the sugars have to be either removed or enhanced. (ever see a big dark stogie in a guy's mouth and think "now THERE is a stong cigar"? truth is that he is smoking what is called a maduro- maduro meaning ripe, the process for making a maduro wrapper involves bringing out the sugar content, so in most cases a maduro is a slightly sweet, more mellow smoke than a natural wrapper).

A Bad Cigar Day, sounds like a good book. Somehow a bad cigar day turns into a mescaline trip and all the hi jinks of finding a smokeable cigar . You can run into Duck thats horseback with a bag of peyote and a six pack of beer with

I never had a bad cigar day, but when I smoked 10-15 blunts per day, I had bad blunt days. It's amazing how much you learn about cigars or whatever you're smoking as time goes on.

This thread has be craving a cigar too....

agreed...what was I thinking?!?..vices become that after pleasure is recognized..tell you what canndo..I'm gonna get a rich, salty chocolaty stogie(we have 5 shops in town,I get vector at each one for my bho),a nice bottle of whiskey(makers reserve, since I'm a makers mark ambassador) and slowly enjoy each on my back porch the next sunny day I have..any suggestions on the tastes I described as far as a brand?(and let's make it affordable,I'm over doing it with the whiskey, lol)

And it continues - I just had to put out a CAO brazilia torpedo - DAMN - no smoke, I don't think it tunneled but I don't have a clipper that is wider than the girth of the cigar so I can't even do a post mortum. I'm trying an Anduello Project 805 and it is all bite and no flavor.

Will this curse never end?

Try a Patel, or a Tatue. You can't go wrong with an Punch at all or a La Gloria Cubana - you won't get the salt, that is a more difficult thing. I have a box of El Rico Habanos that have the prelight smell and taste of a foreign shipping container - you know the smell, slightly ocean - you have smelled it when you opened a box of some electronic component. The smell is slightly offputting but the taste is extraordinary.

Or try an AJ Fernandez, one of the cheaper ones, as their premium lines are very expensive.

I am curious there are folks around that use tobacco for religious/spiritual uses...getting visions and what not

And I have heard that the strain of tobacco in normal cigs is the lighter baby cousin of the true tobacco, that was used back in the day...I have gotten some wonderful tobacco from someone out east during some tribal event when I was living in phoenix, they gave it to me rolled up in a corn husk...it was much heavier then a normal cig and definitely felt a "buzz" if you will

Do you know if most "good" cigar producers are using stronger or weaker strains of tobacco or does it just depend?

Thats unfortunate. I love the brazilia, Ive never had a problem with them. I ordered a 5 pack of the CAO Italia to try out though and all 5 of them were plugged/wouldnt draw right. It was like trying to drink a frozen milk shake with a straw.

For a newer cigar smoker, I always recommend Perdomo as a brand. I feel they have a cigar for every palate. What you described, I'd suggest the Perdomo 10th Anniversary maduro. You can expect to pay more in a shop vs online, but even here in CA they are generally less than $10, should be about $7-$8.

Some cigars are plenty strong, Joyo De Nicaragua is right up there, you WILL get a buzz, The Casa Magna Oscuro is another powerful smoke.

All good suggestions, I'm also rather partial to Feuntes. PGs go well with whiskeys as well but are a bit pricey, there's a guy who used to blend for tehm who started his own line that's really good. Alex Bradley or something like that.

Very well written story. However I personally find it disgusting somebody could be so addicted and fixated to a tobacco product.
