Bad shrooms?

I'm starting to think that it's pretty much impossible to grow bad shrooms because they simply won't grow if there are bad bacterias that took over the mycelium. Can anyone clear this up for me? Cause I hear all the time that "bad shrooms" will kill you.

Yeah, if there aren't any contams and you buy the spores from a trusted source... you'll be growing legit shrooms. A lot of "bad shrooms" are shrooms that people find out in a field or in a forest and they turn out to be some other poisonous shroom that just looked like psilocybin shrooms

Their can be other stuff growing on and around the caps that can make them 'bad'

Thats why they say to toss anything that even remotly looks contaminated

in all likely hood the cake/bulk is supporting many many different species not just the target

Yeah I think I said that. The substrate is not the only thing that can become contaminated. The term "Contams" is a general word to describe any unwanted growth, regardless of what it is growing on.

There are many species of bacteria that will grow on mycelium and mushrooms, that you will never even know are there. For example psuedomonas sp. In small amounts it probably wont do much to you, but it can make you a little sick in other cases. It is also the bacteria that causes bacterial blotch when the caps stay too wet for too long.

Just because the cap is not rotting off does not mean its not present though ;)

There are several others that do the same thing, so my recommendation to most people is to make tea with their mushrooms to help avoid issues. Normally though everything is all good.

Mike is correct. There are instances where mushrooms are not dried quickly enough, a particular bacteris grows on the moist cap, produces toxins and then is dried. This csn easily cause stomach priblems that are attributed to the mushroom itself.

Not to say that all stomach upset is caused by bacteria. The chitin in the mushroom is said to have gastric effects but i suspect there are other compounds as well. What i do know is that contrary to mescaline, psilocybin does not inherently cause stomach problems
