Bagseed? Who cares? My first grow.

This is my first grow attempt and I thought I would share with everyone. Comments are welcome as well as appreciated.

Let me know what I'm doing right, wrong, or what I am not doing at all!

So here we go on this adventure of sorts!!!!

FIRST ATTEMPT

I acquired 2 seeds. Used paper towel method for germination. In about 24 hours the seeds sprouted a little white root. I planted both seeds in miracle grow potting soil with the taproot down. I am using a small fan to circulate the air. I have a wet hand towel on a plate to hopefully add a little bit of humidity to my closet. I add water to the handtowel each day to make sure it is wet. I used the cord from my moms old broken lamp as a hookup for the 23W CFL lights. They are on a timer. 19 hours light. 5 hours dark.

Day 7. 4-21-09

Right now there are two round leaves and two small pointed leaves. Light green. I went and bought hookups for more CFLs today. I put the plants at approximately half an inch from the lights. I am hoping that this will stop the stem from growing taller too quick. My fingers are crossed. Plants are each under 1 42W CFL about one inch away.

if you are using miracle grow make sure not to feed them with other nutes....dont use the towel just put a pan of water in there....good luck

4-22-09 I transplanted the babies today. I put the in larger plastic pots. I put the stems of the sprouts further down to provide support and to make the plants shorter. I watered them each with one cup of water. I had the plants under more light than usual since my landlords were coming to the apartment building. They got probably about 24 hours of light. I also moved the light closer. Approximately 1 CM away from the leaves.

more light is a good plan....would put at least 2-3 inches away from plants....just remember that sometimes plant stretch is genetics, especially with less stable seeds from bags....its always better to learn for cheap b4 you waste money on good seeds

4-23-09 I woke up this morning and the little tiny leaves forming were a little bit brown. I'm not sure if it is because I transplanted them, too much water, or if the light was too close, too hot, too much. I moved the light up to about 2 inches to see if the brown goes away. I am also not watering today. My new watering regimen will be two plastic cups full every other day. 4:30pm I added a little bit of water to each of the stems with a little bit of my own urine. Supposedly it has (N). We shall see haha. I also hung a wet towel in the closet thinking that it will help provide a more humid environment. Right now seeing how fast the top soil dries, I think it may be too dry.
NOTE* The timer was reset to 18 hours light and 6 hours dark. This was after the landlord came.

First Measurement: The first set of leaves on plant D are currently are 3.2cm. The first set of leaves on plant X are currently 3.1cm. The stems are each protruding about two inches from the medium. Measured at approximately 9:00pm.

Comments for viewers...

I did buy more lights. I knew i would need them. I now am using 4 42W CFL's and 4 26W Cfl's.

I do plan on adding nutes even though I am using miracle grow. I will however be adding very miniscule amounts of the nutes as to prevent any burning.

04-24-09 Both plants are doing well. Both first set of leaves have grown nicely. The soil is pretty dry on top but still moist underneath. No more water yet. Second set of leaves is almost all green again. Not much brown is left. I do think it was overwatering or the transplant that did that.

Measurement: First set of leaves on D are 3.7cm (+.5cm). First set of leaves on X are 4.2cm! (+1.1cm) Stems are growing. First set of leaves are beginning to move upward and away from the round leaves.

I also used miracle grow this is also my first grow so take what I say with a grain of salt. My plants had plenty of nutes for the three weeks. at about that point some of them started looking like they were running out, but not all of them. With MG be carefull and add nutes once they look like they need it.

4-25-09

And we have liftoff! Second set of leaves is coming. I have also included a pic of the pots and 42W Cfl's i am using near the plants.

All is well. Leaves are green. I dont quite remember if I watered this day.

I started my grow in the MG organic potting soil, and I hated it. It retains tons of moisture and can get compacted, so I suggest adding perlite to loosen it up a little. I switched to Fox Farm Ocean Forest and couldn't be happier.

Lots of people rip on Miracle Grow...and for good reason. But lots of people have success with it too. Just watch out for overwatering--it's a weed, and it needs the soil to completely dry out between waterings. Good luck:leaf:

Ok...lets jump ahead.

4-30-09

I have been watering the plants about every 4 days. I watered them today and I think that the soil may be getting a little dry on top. When I watered the water didnt even want to go into the soil because it was so dry. Because of this, I placed white sheets of paper below the plants hoping it would protect the soil from drying out to quickly.

I currently have 2 42W CFL's and 1 26W CFL over one plant, while the other plant has 4 26W CFL's over it.

Plants are on their 3rd set of leaves now. 5 points! I'm happy for em.

I have been seing a couple of needlepoint sized bugs in my closet. Squished those MF's! Hasnt become a big issue yet. I never find more than 2.

its always better to learn for cheap b4 you waste money on good seeds

I don’t really agree with that. Individual beans can be purchased and if someone is only attempting a two plant grow to someone can purchase two seeds for around $5.00 to $6.00 each, feminized, and know what strain they are growing and know they will be getting females and have a much better chance of being able to research and find out what sort of nutes work best for the strain and on what schedule to feed.

If someone cannot afford $10.00 to $12.00 for two feminized seeds it is extremely likely they will not be able to afford all the other things they will need. Risking $10.00 to $12.00 is not much of a risk and if it is seen as a big risk to someone evidently they cannot afford to grow in the first place.

You cannot count on what you get from bagseed. You could have a good germ rate and you might get a 0% germ rate. Genetics can vary greatly and some seeds may not be fully viable and have very slow growth rates and various problems and the new grower can be led to believe that any and all possible problems from low germ rate to less that acceptable yield to low potency is all or mainly their fault. What they think they are learning could be what is not most important to be learned.

I think it is much better for someone to pick a strain that was once very popular and is proven but is no longer the flavor of the month or one that is proven but has never caught on with buyers in a large way so they are now inexpensive and purchase them to learn with.

So....just as a memo to everyone.....I do not ever plan on buying known strain seeds. I think I will like the oppurtunity to be working with the unknown. I dont really have a huge awesome setup anyways. I sing to my plants. I water them. I give them light. I dont really care if they end up male or female or even if I get wonderful buds. That would just be nice in the end.

I'm not plaesed with my MG. My next grow will be with a soil that has no nutes to start. I ended up bying 2 different soils for my grow(not much available in winter around here) first MG then I got a bag of Scotts Premium potting soil. I Scotts also had nutes but is growing the plants with what I feel is a better color and healtier looking leaves.
In this picture the back leaves are in the Scotts the blurry one in front is in MG.:peace:

So...I bought a indoor thermometer yesterday because I thought my closet was getting a little warm. It turns out that the average temp in my closet is about 85 degrees....much higher than i would like it to be. I only have one little fan in the closet for circulation but the door to the closet stays closed. I think it is because I have 7 CFL's in the closet and they are producing more heat than anticipated.

Any suggestions as to lower the temp?

I cant really have a ventilation system because it is a closet with a door.
