When I read the title of this thread, the first thing I thought was "Dangerous"...Lol. I personally wouldn't want to be collecting big piles of bear poo, due to the fact that there would likely be a 800 lb. bear in the vicinity. I don't really believe in the use of firearms, especially against animals in their natural environment.

Scientifically, all animal poo over time will degrade into very useful nutrients. I will say this though - All poo contains pathogens, and certain species of animals' manure contain pathogens that are VERY harmful to people. Rarely are these pathogens harmful to the plants, but it might be something to take into consideration if you do decide to use it. I would research what is known about dog poo and its use as a fertilizer, seeing as dogs and bears have very similar genomes. You more than likely will get very little info searching specifically for bear poo applied as a fertilizer, probably for the reasons I stated above. I wouldn't use it unless I had no other option...If it's just a spur of the moment thought, I would just let it go if I were you.

Best of luck to you!! And be careful, lol.

Bears are omnivorous and eat both plants and animals. The waste from a bear probably has tons of harmful bacteria in it because of the meat in it's diet. I would not use it for your soil. Similar to dog shit imo.

Think herbivores - like cows, horses, goats, sheep, etc. Cows have so many stomachs and break down the plant matter the most. Followed by horses, goats, etc.

Good luck out there - shit happens!

yeah I was thinking herbivores... I think that bears around here eat mostly berries, the only meat would be from fish maybe? I dunno have not put much thought into it...

Every time I ran in the trails recently I was coming across those big piles of blue//red/brown bear poop (telling me it was mostly from berries) so I just thought I would see what people thinks ... isnt there some types of bear that eat strictly berries!?

All North America bears are Omnivorous (WEO Polar), so they will opportunistically eat carrion if they can find it.
In addition to that some actively predate deer/elk/moose calves and if you're in an area with a salmon run they will feed on them as well.
I'd be pretty leery of using bear scat in soil due to the pathogen possibilities.

I don't really believe in the use of firearms, especially against animals in their natural environment.
Timothy Treadwell thought the same thing - albeit he also got away with (for a while) imposing himself into their personal space and thought it "cool" to be as close as possible while he busied himself petting & singing to them.

There's probably a poodle-per-pile as far as meat goes. They will eat anything including dog food, road kill and animals that died in their tracks.

Not so sure of dog being in their diet.
Without going into detail I will say that through direct personal experience I never had a bear attracted in to a canine carcass.
They avoided them like the plague as a matter of fact.

Yeh, that's why you don't camp out with a family of 30 grizzly bears, giving them all names and talking to them like they are your friends. Don't get me wrong, I respect the man for what he did, he seemed like a really nice guy...But you can't complain if you get eaten by a grizzly bear, if you knowingly put yourself in front of a grizzly bear, day after day. Nature isn't a game, although to people it is. Its all about survival out there.
