I am considering changing from miracle grow. I have heard fox farm is good, but i dont want to amend my soil. I will be using mega crop nutes. Is there any soil that can be used without mixing/adding and is affordable?

Fox Farm Ocean Forest is actually pretty solid soil, I'd definitely recommend it as something you can use without needing to amend it. Roots organic is another solid choice (it comes in the camo bag).

Just a heads up that with FFOF, you don't need to use nutrients for the first month or so.

Is perlite needed to be added?

I use a soil called Fafard. It is a lot like Foxfarm except that there are no nutrients added. I do use Foxfarm nutrients, just not the soil. I found Foxfarm soil to be good enough but not worth the price.
I do a little better adding a little sand to the Fafard.
I did use Miracle Grow as an experiment one time. The results were better than I expected they would be.

It's personal preference, I've used it with and without perlite and had success. With that being said, getting yourself a $5 bag of perlite to mix in is a good idea.

If you look in my signature the last run I did of GG4 was in straight FFOF, no additional perlite.

Fafard is much more affordable than foxfarm. Where should i buy it online? Would i be ok just using the soil straight without adding sand etc? I do not want to mix things into my soil. I will be using mega crop nutes. Will this be enough for a successful grow?

whatever you do.. just dont use miracle gro.
No worries, I am not going to use miracle grow. I have had nute burn so bad from miracle grow that all my fan leaves dropped off. My plants produced decent quality bud, but the yield was awful. I am leaning towards fafard because it is affordable

If a person does use miracle grow soil don't add any nutes to it and buy sticky stripes as that soil is usually infested with fungus bugs that will piss you off real bad trying to deal with those.

You should be good bro. I used FFOF and mega crop on my first grow. I did add a little perlite but you could probably get away without adding it. You should be good for 3 or 4 weeks with the FFOF, then I would start at 1/4 strength on the mega crop, and water until you get some runoff -around 20%. Only increase nutes little by little as needed. I burnt one of my plants pretty good by feeding too much with very little runoff... Good luck bro

What is the best method to catch runoff water? Do you mind sharing what your yield was and what light you were running?

You can put a tray or something under your pots and suck up the runoff with a wet/dry vac. Or you can take your plants out the tent every time to water but it's a hassle. There's other ways too... Hell you can soak the water up with a towel of ya really want lol. I just recommend not letting them sit in the runoff, and don't let the runoff sit around in your tent if you're in one.

There a lot of things I would do different on that grow. But I grew 3 plants under a gavita 6/750 de. I wasn't focused on yield and I don't have scales, but I got 2 to 3 jars of solid bud per plant. So probably 2 or 3 ounces per plant at least, plus all the fluffy shit which was probably an ounce or more...

Thanks for the tips. I am opting to save power and use a 150hps and let my 400hps gather dust. I am aiming for 50g out of the plants from 5 fem seeds once they arrive.

No prob bro, and as long as you have some patience and just let the plants do their thing, you'll be just fine. Good luck man

I don't know if Faford is available on line or not. It is not all that cheap. About the sand, I doubt that it makes a lot of difference. I can't say that soil is soil but once you start using quality soil, the difference between one and another starts becoming less and less. I think I do a little better with Fafard than I did with Foxfarm but the difference is just noticeable.

It sounds like a successful grow to me based on soil choice. Probably if the grow doesn't go well, it will be something besides the soil.

The other factor is what constitutes a successful grow?
My criteria, is mostly, is it acceptable?
The best reason I know of to get your ducks completely in order is that every decision takes about 4 months to see the final result. It is a shame to take up that much time growing something that turns out bad.
