Yeah, I agree about the research. I think the general consensus is that soil is the easiest. Hydro is a little harder but in my opinion not all that difficult. The yields are better than soil though. Aeroponics is the most difficult and/or expensive but gives the highest yields.
Personally, I'm going with a DWC (Deep Water Culture) system right now using rock wool starter cubes placed into net pots filled with hydroton. The advantage of a DWC system is it can be done DIY without a lot of trouble or expense. I'm thinking I would like to step up to Waterfarm units in the future and use the DWC equipment to aerate the reservoirs. This combines the advantages of a drip system which is a good watering solution for seedlings with the advantages of DWC for larger plants. I think the Waterfarm units are pretty popular here for that reason.
I've read a lot on this site and others to come to the conclusion that this is what will likely work for me.
