Its better to water with lights on cuz you can see what your doing lol =P
I water anywhere form 30 min to 1 hour after lights come on. My dirt hasnt warmed up yet, everything is still nice from nighttime temps, and iirc thats when the plants are going to take up most of there water/food for the day.

I like to go into lights out where they are bone dry and water at sunrise. If you got nutes in the water you know they are getting sucked up, plus they have a full light cycle to dry out. If you water at night, transpiration slows considerably and the roots just sit in soggy medium all night. Plenty of people do it otherwise but this is what I prefer to do and my reasoning.
Honestly unless you got a high humidity problem or mold/mildew going on I doubt if it matters all that much. You just don't want to start or accentuate any problems with excess moisture.

Hey guys, sorry to resurrect an ancient thread but I'm concerned about my HIDs during watering. I hear that bulbs can implode with just a single droplet of water.
My question is how do you water if you're spraying the leaves with a mister? Does leaving the lights off for 10 minutes or so affect the plants while you water them? When I water my plants should I also mist the leaves, how often?

i had my watering on a timer, it goes on 30 minutes after the lights for 15 min, then it waters again 30 min before lights out in 4'' rock wool flood n drain, worked great for years, i recently switched to dwc and the emitters kick on once a day just after lights on, but once the roots are down into the res i usually shut off the emitters entirely. now im building another new system that will recirculate water constantly from res through the tubes, back to res 24/7 in 3'' net pots w/ rock wool cubes.

Pecker, I mist the leaves to avoid spider mites and regulate humidity.

Dr.Pecker What happens is the light will burn the wet plants it acts like a magnifying glass. Run a fan on them and dry them off before turning the lights back on. I almost burned down a greenhouse with water believe it or not. Hows that helping with the bugs btw I'm curious
