BHO issue. At a loss:(

Hello all

I made a few batches of BHO tonight and it tastes and smells like plastic VERY bad. Its acrid and i KNOW its not smokable.
I used 7x's Butane and left it in the heat bath for 30 minutes and vac'd it as well.

This has NEVER happened to me before out of 10 previous runs. Haven't found any reference to plastic smelling bho online....anyone have a clue about the issue??

Brand is called 'Liquid' 7x refined. It was Bubba kush that was cut, dried and cured for a week then ran into a clean pyrex dish. All tools where cleaned WELL with IPA.

hmmm have you used this brand before? what % return did you get? did the bud have a wierd smell at all?

maybe next time try out colibri or newport butane

also how hot is your water bath? try boiling water and use that vs just hot sink water and give it some good mixing while its on the heat

I don't think 7x refined really means it's quality. I'd have to look back at some bho threads to refresh my memory but I think the best stuff will say "99.9% pure" or something like that. there's a certain specific marking like that to look for on the label

edit: the thing to look for is "near zero impurities." they can refine it 100 times and then add impurities to it and have a crap product, but the "near zero impurities" label is regulated so they can't use that unless it's really good stuff

Impure gas smells like farts. Not plastic. Tell me, what did you use as your tube? If it's PVC, there's your problem. If you use anything but stainless steel, consider your tube as DISPOSABLE and one-use only. And what did you use as a screen? Nylon for example will also react. It's not the gas. Even the WORST gas can make a passable oil as long as you clean it out properly.

It was called '7x Liquid Butane Gas' It comes in a can that looks like an Ed Hardy t-shirt.IMAG1770.jpg IMAG1771.jpg

Here are some pics. The guy at the Head shop SAID it was great stuff and that he had used it himself with great results.
But who knows....

I used a glass tube that fits an Ounce and a half each packing. Dual Brown paper coffee filters were used as filtering agent.
This is not what i would consider passable at all. It pops and sizzles when you put it on a nail and just smells 'chemical'

I know somebody else around on RIU that uses that one, but the 5x one. He's making some of the top BHO I've seen in my life.

I'd guess some impurity slipped into the herb mate. Could've been something on your hands, a little piece of plastic, or something similar. I once left the bag of trim in my kitchen on top of my veggie baskets, after I made the oil, it smelled and tasted like ONIONS it was GROSS.

Hope you figure it out bud, but your gas looks like the one to use, it's definitely not the problem.

Stok is the only consumer lighter fluid that is almost 100% butane. Vector has the highest % of butane then colibri and newport.The 5x and 7x only mean how many times the gas has been refined and says nothing as to the actual ingredients. All but stok are a mixture of iso butane n butane and propane with some having all sorts of added chemicals. Also unless you are using a vacuum chamber to properly purge your oil you will never get out all the solvents. You can learn more about bho and other concentrates at skunk pharms research.

OK the popping and sizzling is WRONG. That's butane still stuck in there or some other solvent, but it doesn't usually smell like plastic it just looks less opaque then.

Try leaving it out in a warm bowl for a few hours. If it s gas in there it will slowly bubble out, pretty soon the top of t he oil will look kinda 'yellow' before going to amber. Leave it open for up to 3 days... There might be some hope yet bro.

If it doesn't have the near zero impurities label I wouldn't use it. Butane with this label has less then 15ppm of impurities in it.butane that doesn't have less then 15ppm don't qualify for this label. I know Colibri and lucienne both have this label that is what I use.

When in doubt. Throw it out.
Im a vector man myself never had that problem. i have had sizzle and crack though maybe you got some water in it from the bath.

Yeah you heard it here first every body. Dispensaries are now known for having the "legit" shit. Lmfao. Less talking more doing.

If the ganja quality is already an issue, "legit/legal" concentrates will be green/dark brown/black from Arizona dispensaries.
Reliable Cali techs get PAID, no 10$/hr bullshi to play around fumes. Third degree burns and exploding buildings is what 10/hr gets, all it takes is one idiot fuck up. Nobody is exporting this commodity to other states like low grade flowers, unless its riddled with impurities, too much loot to be made from the waxes/shatter right, market is hot.
End product is only as good as the original material, extraction does not turn shit to gold.
The die hard oil heads/techs have grows completely dedicated to trates.
