WASHINGTON (AP) — The FBI has disrupted a group of hackers working at the direction of the Chinese government who targeted universities, government agencies and other organizations, Director Chris Wray said Wednesday.

The hacking campaign known as Flax Typhoon installed malicious software on more than 200,000 consumer devices, including cameras, video recorders and home and office routers, to create a massive botnet — a network of infected computers. The botnet was used to facilitate cyber crimes, such as the theft of sensitive information from victims’ networks.

“Flax Typhoon’s actions caused real harm to its victims, who had to devote precious time to clean up the mess when they discovered the malware,” Wray said at the Aspen Cyber Summit.

Speaking at the same conference, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said the average citizen should care because the case involves “criminal activity, disruptive activity going on in potentially their devices. And, and it is part of a broader ecosystem that malicious cyber actors are using.”

The FBI and Justice Department, which obtained a warrant to seize the botnet’s infrastructure, did not identify any of the targets by name but said they included universities, government agencies, telecommunications providers, media organizations and nongovernmental organizations. Half of the hijacked devices were located in the U.S., Wray said.

“This was another successful disruption, but make no mistake — it’s just one round in a much longer fight,” Wray said. “The Chinese government is going to continue to target your organizations and our critical infrastructure, either by their own hand or concealed through their proxies, and we’ll continue to work with our partners to identify their malicious activity, disrupt their hacking campaigns, and bring them to light.”

Flax Typhoon was described in a Microsoft report in August 2023 that said the group had stepped up its targeting of Taiwanese organizations as well as government agencies in other countries.

The disruption was revealed nine months after Wray disclosed to Congress a separate takedown of a Chinese state-sponsored hacking group known as Volt Typhoon, in which U.S.-based small office and home routers owned by private citizens and companies were hijacked by hackers to cover their tracks as they sowed the malware. Their ultimate targets included water treatment plants, the electrical grid and transportation systems across the U.S.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A hacking group tied to Russian intelligence tried to worm its way into the systems of dozens of Western think tanks, journalists and former military and intelligence officials, Microsoft and U.S. authorities said Thursday.

The group, known as Star Blizzard to cyberespionage experts, targeted its victims with emails that appeared to come from a trusted source — a tactic known as spear phishing. In fact, the emails sought access to the victims’ internal systems, as a way to steal information and disrupt their activities.

Star Blizzard’s actions were persistent and sophisticated, according to Microsoft, and the group often did detailed research on its targets before launching an attack. Star Blizzard also went after civil society groups, U.S. companies, American military contractors and the Department of Energy, which oversees many nuclear programs, the company said.

On Thursday, a U.S. court unsealed documents authorizing Microsoft and the Department of Justice to seize more than 100 website domain names associated with Star Blizzard. That action came after a lawsuit was filed against the network by Microsoft and the NGO-Information Sharing and Analysis Center, a nonprofit tech organization that investigated Star Blizzard.

Authorities haven’t gone into details about Star Blizzard’s effectiveness but said they expect Russia to keep deploying hacking and cyberattacks against the U.S. and its allies.

“The Russian government ran this scheme to steal Americans’ sensitive information, using seemingly legitimate email accounts to trick victims into revealing account credentials,” Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said in announcing the U.S. actions against Star Blizzard. “With the continued support of our private sector partners, we will be relentless in exposing Russian actors and cybercriminals and depriving them of the tools of their illicit trade.”

Star Blizzard has been linked to Russia’s Federal Security Service, or FSB. Last year, British authorities accused the group of mounting a yearslong cyberespionage campaign against U.K. lawmakers. Microsoft said it has been tracking the group’s activities since 2017.

Microsoft said it observed Star Blizzard attempt dozens of hacking efforts targeting 30 different groups since January 2023. The tech giant’s cybersecurity experts say Star Blizzard has proven to be especially elusive.

“Star Blizzard’s ability to adapt and obfuscate its identity presents a continuing challenge for cybersecurity professionals,” the company wrote in a report on its findings.

U.S. authorities charged two Russian men last year in connection with Star Blizzard’s past actions. Both are believed to be in Russia.

Along with American targets, Star Blizzard went after people and groups throughout Europe and in other NATO countries. Many had supported Ukraine following Russia’s invasion.

A message left with the Russian Embassy in Washington was not immediately returned Thursday.

This is actually one of the best conversations I have seen one of the people pushing reality online (Destiny in this case) have with conservative hosts. I kind of hope these guys make it, but lol there is going to be tough for them to break their 'conservative' characters and stay funded is my guess.

@23:10- They brought up the Israeli studies that trolls were pushing around the internet to trick people into having false sense of knowledge. This was also the time that you had all kinds of hospitals (like Henry Ford Hospital (pretty sure it was that one out of Dearborn), here in Michigan) pushing out propaganda studies too confusing everyone and causing people to have a false sense of goal post shifting coming form the scientific community, when it was nonstop fringe shit that was being interpreted by trolls causing that.

@40 minutes they start to get into talking about Trans rights stuff and in a lot of the back and forth generally good spirited shit talking one thing that never gets done is getting the guys to sit back and try to instead of thinking of all the bad ways that science can be used, to try to think of times that a doctor and parent might have some very real situations they need to be able to reach a conclusion that has not really ever even be thought of to have the conversation, much less it become a government issue because a bunch of religiously aimed propaganda has mucked up the conversation.

When they talk about prison transgender inmates getting surgery/treatment, again just try to think of things that people may have to have that surgery or it would actually get more expensive for us to care for while letting another human suffer because some political troll passing laws to 'own the libs'.

Side note, when Trump goes off about 'kids being turned into trans at school without parents knowing', and gets trolled for saying he is talking about sex changes, it is a set up. If a kid decides they feel more comfortable and says they want to be called something else and feels confident enough to tell their classmates and teacher to refer to them that way, it is basically describing what trump is trolling on about.

Last note, 'too far left, too far right' people deciding what they want to do with their bodies is not a 'left' thing just because the GQP is making it 'their' thing. Standing against these Republicans trying like hell for force everyone into their little christo-fascist dreamscape is not a right/left issue at the end of the day, it is a anti-stability/pro-stability thing.

'What is a woman': a subset of humanity with respect to the genders.

@1:34:00 ish they started getting into the why you vote for Biden discussion. At 1:36:00 the Russian propagandist mask slips hard on these guys, and it basically just is on from there. Looking back, it is almost like it was a look of 'ok, here we go, time to pay some bills' part of the conversation they were about to get into.

@1:45:00 Destiny cuts through a lot of the bullshit talk about why Putin's bullshit about it being about the tag line he programmed so many folks here into using 'protecting their border' is why he started his invasion into Ukraine. I just thought it is interesting that Trump is so stupid to not learn from history, Putin's Ukrainian puppet dictator was actually chased out of Ukraine in 2014 when he had peaceful protesters shot, which is what Orange Mussolini wants to be able to do here.

@1:46:00 The one hosts say something like "Putin is a murderer and killer, America has killed way more people..." Putin is a person, America is a nation.

@1:50:00 is why I really think that these poor guys might end up screwing themselves. Or at least the one twin that is not in on the con fully, or is and had one of those moments that you out yourself out of guilt or some other emotion they may have been feeling. They tell a story about a pusher of the anti-Ukrainian/pro-Putin who is from there, and the other brother steps in and says 'works at the bank', which gets shut down quickly then laughed off, and very much like a fuckkkkk moment gets on the other twins face.

Screen Shot 2024-10-22 at 10.07.39 AM.png

To get out of that, they then get into talking about immigration and how great Trump was, but got shot down about how Trump killed the last border bill. I think it is also a good point to bring up the other times Trump screwed us economically (shutting down the government) and ended up not being able to say yes on the border deal again and again because he (his nazi handlers who were last in his ear) wants it to be a political (race baiting) issue to use as fear mongering porn.

@2:00:00 they but Biden'd Russian propaganda talking points.

@2:08:00 they say something about Trump being impeached for the phone call, what triggered the impeachment inquiry was Trump illegally withholding the whistleblower complaint for longer than that couple weeks that it was legally allowed to be held back. I really think it is important to remember that Trump triggered his own 'witch hunt' that just happened to be what it was that anyone doing their job would have to follow through on, but still on Trump's terms until all of Trump's stupidity was too much to hide on that phone call where he was shaking down an ally to spread the propaganda that like it or not, did get brought into notoriety even more because of it.

@2:11:00 is why I think these conservative hosts like having Destiny on so much. He is so light on the pushback to the actual attack that Russia and Trump that they don't get challenged hard on calling it out. I wish they would get pushed back with 'Are you ok with your and everyone you care about's data that the Republicans coveted for decades to just be handed over to Putin's spy by Trump's campaign advisor?

Screen Shot 2024-10-22 at 11.20.44 AM.png

After listening to it again he did a solid job, I am just so in the weeds the talking points that come up again and again in the conservative circles is so annoying.

@2:14:00 they are talking about the Trump con job line "No Collusion".

lmao

June 7th 2016 video:

I will never forget seeing Ivanka's face when Trump outs his poor double nepotistic-dipshit Jr's meeting with 'the crown prosecutor of Russia' to get dirt on Clinton.

And then 2 months later as he is getting heat, Trump finally seals the deal on his end of the attack on our democracy from Russia and they immediately went to work to get him elected.

I mean come on. Why is that not the go to timeline with the stupid "Russia Russia Russia" trigger phrase? Is there a legal reason or something that I am not seeing, or is everyone worried that people are so triggered by that, if it is deprogrammed some really crazy shit starts up?

Anyways it was a good listen. The comment sections are interesting. Hopefully these guys make it if they are not just knowingly pushing Russian propaganda doing the work to divide our nation.

I had heard about them and now I saw one.
I'm talking about the fake Kamala adds touting project 2028 and a mandatory gun buy back program.
Looks like some serious and sophisticated psychological manipulation going down. Smells like foreign assistance on this one.
The oligarchs must be pretty scared, to be so obvious.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Russia has helped amplify and spread false and misleading internet claims about recent hurricanes in the United States and the federal government’s response, part of a wider effort by the Kremlin to manipulate America’s political discourse before the presidential election, new research shows.

The content, spread by Russian state media and networks of social media accounts and websites, criticizes the federal response to Hurricanes Helene and Milton, exploiting legitimate concerns about the recovery effort in an attempt to paint American leaders as incompetent and corrupt, according to research from the Institute for Strategic Dialogue. The London-based organization tracks disinformation and online extremism.

In some cases, the claims about the storms include fake images created using artificial intelligence, such as a photo depicting scenes of devastating flooding at Disney World that never happened, researchers say.

The approach is consistent with the Kremlin’s long-standing practice of identifying legitimate debates and contentious issues in the U.S. and then exploiting them. Previous disinformation campaigns have harnessed debates about immigration, racism, crime and the economy in an effort to portray the U.S. as corrupt, violent and unjust.

U.S. intelligence officials and private tech companies say Russian activity has increased sharply before the Nov. 5 election as Moscow tries to capitalize on an opportunity to undermine its chief global adversary.

By seizing on real concerns about disaster recovery, Russia’s disinformation agencies can worm their way into U.S. discourse, using hot-button issues to undermine Americans’ trust in their government and each other.

“These are not situations that foreign actors are creating,” said Melanie Smith, director of research at ISD. “They’re simply pouring gasoline on fires that already exist.”

The content identified by ISD included English-language posts obviously meant for Americans, as well as Russian-language propaganda intended for domestic audiences. Much of the disinformation took aim at the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Democratic administration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. She is her party’s nominee in the White House race against former President Donald Trump.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine remains the Kremlin’s prime motivation for spreading lies about the hurricane response. If Russia can persuade enough Americans to oppose U.S. support for Ukraine, that could ease the way for a Moscow victory, officials and analysts have said.

U.S. intelligence officials have said Russia’s disinformation seems designed to support Trump, who has praised Russian President Vladimir Putin and disparaged the NATO alliance and Ukraine’s leaders. Posts linked to Russia routinely denigrate Harris, saying she is ignoring the pleas of storm victims. By contrast, a recent post from Russian state media company RT called Trump “a mystical figure of historic proportions.”

Intelligence officials confirmed Tuesday that Russia created a manipulated video to smear Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

Russia has rejected claims that it trying to meddle in the U.S. election. The Russian Embassy hasn’t responded to messages this week seeking comment about recent allegations by researchers and intelligence officials.

Researchers at ISD found that Russian disinformation agents exploited weak content moderation on U.S.-owned social media platforms such as X to spread their content far and wide. Before it was purchased and renamed by Elon Musk, the platform once known as Twitter required labels on content from authoritarian state media. Musk rescinded that rule and gutted the platform’s content moderation efforts, leading to a surge in foreign propaganda, hate speech and extremist recruitment.

Often the false or misleading claims come from fake accounts or websites that mimic Americans or legitimate news outlets, making it difficult to determine their true origin. Unsuspecting Americans then repost and spread the content.

In July, American intelligence officials warned that “unwitting Americans” were helping do Russia’s work for it.

Vast armies of fake or automated accounts help spread the material further.

Researchers at the Israeli tech firm Cyabra analyzed popular posts on X that criticized FEMA for its storm response. A significant number could not be verified as belonging to a real person; one-quarter of all the responses to popular posts were deemed fake. The posts were seen by users over half a billion times.

In response, a spokesperson for X pointed to the platform’s system that allows users to add context to posts with false claims. The company did not respond to questions about its labeling policy.

“The false claims, ranging from FEMA diverting funds to aid migrants to conspiracy theories about weather manipulation, undermine public trust in government as we near election day, which could seriously impact voter confidence,” Cyabra researchers said in a report.

Politicians also have helped spread Russia’s talking points.

Rep. Paul Gosar, R-Ariz., gave an interview to the Russian state media outlet Sputnik News for a piece that played up criticism of the hurricane response. He told Sputnik that the federal response was “nonexistent,” a claim easily debunked by photos and videos of FEMA recovery workers as well as the firsthand accounts of local leaders and residents in hard-hit regions.

Gosar repeated another misleading claim that “billions of FEMA disaster funds” had been given instead to immigrants without legal status. In truth, money that funds U.S. border control and immigration programs comes from a different source than disaster funds.

Gosar’s office did not respond to messages seeking comment Wednesday.
I saw this on Hulu (?) the other day, and it was like watching a football game that you just keep screaming at all the missed things.

First, it was just heartbreaking. I think about how innocent and hopeful it was when their music was hitting it big and to hear them describe the first time they heard about people talking about them online, just tear jerking to know what the next decade and a half of this online attack on our society has caused.

Second early on in the scam the fans that were verifiable (by actually being people in the movie) were sent a demo that they focused on how the music industry was real tight on those at the time (2009-2011), and I was just screaming how those files they clicked just opened up their devices and everyone they sent it to that clicked it. They go on to show the texts from 'Fake Tegan' they got right after they listened to the demo and how they got more suggestive (varied on the people), and all I could think was that makes sense when you think those peoples' computers likely said how big of a crush they had on Tegan and yeah, the troll militarized. The timeline just screams Russian troll. Especially when the accounts track back to the UK around the time Cambridge Analytica scam was rising up and Putin's war with democracies across the planet kicked into high gear.

Project 2028 is basically admitting that Harris is going to win.

Oh how quickly politicians jump in bed with Russia to create and amplify wedge issues. They are cynically seeking votes, uncaring about larger issues like democracy, unconcerned with values like character or honesty. They are literally teaming up with Russia to attack Americans.

And they don't care if it's true or not if it gets attention. Vance says so. We're talking bottom-of-the-barrel character quality. No shame. Only narcissistic self-interest.

But give him a vote and make him your leader, Republicans. Law and order, family values, and freedom from government influence mean nothing when you can team up with a bully to make yourself feel better.

I ran across this and think that it the next level of the Terrance Howard Math Troll IMO. Basically everything is under attack, but pushing out so much false information that seems real, talks can get confusing as hell and people just tune out the 'specialists' because they have 'heard it all before'. Causing distrust in the people who dedicate their lives to learning as much of their fields as possible by generating bots to just drown them out with nonsense (at best, militarized brainwashing anti-science trolls to cause real world distrust between people in real life at worst) real looking spam.

A while back I remember doing a deep dive into something that someone pointed to as 'proof' of scientific community saying something stupid, I forgot what it was, but what I do remember is that the company that was behind the platform that was publishing all the bullshit 'studies' was founded and funded by actual nazis. It is pretty par for the course that they are still out there pumping out the hateful troll propaganda.

Her talking about the trolling nazi professor is not surprising at all. The myth that university professors are all lefties always cracked me up after going through it my second time and seeing it for myself, there are as many closet nazis as there are hippies from what I saw.

Anyways this brings me to Egon Cholokian. Who I learned about the other day in the video that Destiny was looking through his 'followers' and noticing all the bots.

I didn't know their were all sorts of videos out there looking at his response that were pretty hilariously done. But none of the ones I saw focused at all on the part I think is interesting. In one of the videos of this cyborg (?) you can see he is doing a speech in a huge auditorium.

Screen Shot 2024-11-01 at 8.43.00 AM.png

Makes me think about how easy it would be to pay a bunch of folks off the street to fill up spots like this around the world to take real video to build up credibility videos like this that you can just plug any AI or real speaker into them to make it look like they are doing real shit.

(Edit: It would be interesting to actually watch the entire 3 hour long video to see if there are any 'clip-able' part that would be able to be pushed to the vulnerable for propaganda purposes)

If you go down the rabbit hole on this on the surface you can see the dude looks real.

He even shows up on Harvards website.

And when you follow the link to the 2016 it looks like a legit event that he must have been in since his name does show up in the names section of participants, but when you scroll through all the actual presenters he is not there. And if you look at the email they use in the pdf when it was uploaded (?) in Feb 2015 they have a Harvard one, but when inputted into the list in the first link almost 2 years later they put in a gmail address.

I would think that it would be a interesting exercise to look at all the names on those lists that are kind of out of place (gmail addresses instead of schools/businesses) and check if they were also long term bot set ups. I can imagine how easy this would be to set up as a grad assistant. That 2 year between adding in the bots names would make sense. Once at the beginning of their grad program doing grunt work, then one more right before they graduate. If I was working at a university I would be worried about how many bullshit scams like this could be potentially harming my institutions reputation with trolls out there using their branding.

I could see how it would be pretty easy have some smart kid looking to set up a long term troll while going to school at Harvard plant some names throughout their school website for 'credibility', knowing that nobody is ever going to check/question some random person in a event that may or may not be real, would be interesting if a reporter tried to contact the actual scientists (like say some nazis that nobody actually wants to work with but you want to start promoting for maybe some bullshit propaganda podcast or news-esque article) on that list reporting the back story to see if they had any info/pamphlets/videos/pics on it).

I checked a actual scientist database and they had nothing on this dude.

But he did show up on the sketchy one that anyone can put anything on. I didn't do too much of a deep dive into the papers, and only scratched the surface of the people the cyborg (?) supposedly published with, and all kinds of intelligent long term trolling in the works would be my guess. Oh and I was also thinking that this might actually be the one that was funded by the actual nazis to set up their ability to do education trolls.

lol @ the guy pretending like he is the 'friend' of the bot.

His pushing of the 'no more humans will be bloggers' pretty consistently makes me think that the scam is setting up the AI and now when forced to burn it trying to use it to sell the next troll.

This lead me into "Dead Internet (conspiracy) Theory".

Makes sense about half traffic would be bots, only real need one to follow around actual human beings while they are online.

I think this is going to be the hard part of what comes next in the war dividing us. Keeping people engaged with actual real information and conversations with actual people so that the decisions they make are made with the best information so it has the ability to have the best impact the actual human world. How do you overcome people burning themselves out 'Researching' nonsensical catfishing propaganda before they can even get to a fact.

found it....

this was put out by the FBI and others:

URGENT BREAKING: The FBI and National Intelligence Agencies have just confirmed that this video which was shared by MAGA voters on X claiming that Haitians are voting in Georgia, was produced by the Russians.

Here is their FULL Statement:

The IC assesses that Russian influence actors manufactured a recent video that falsely depicted individuals claiming to be from Haiti and voting illegally in multiple counties in Georgia.

This judgment is based on information available to the IC and prior activities of other Russian influence actors, including videos and other disinformation activities. The Georgia Secretary of State has already refuted the video's claims as false.

Russian influence actors also manufactured a video falsely accusing an individual associated with the Democratic presidential ticket of taking a bribe from a U.S. entertainer.

This Russian activity is part of Moscow's broader effort to raise unfounded questions about the integrity of the US election and stoke divisions among Americans, as detailed in prior ODNI election updates. In the lead up to election day and in the weeks and months after, the IC expects Russia to create and release additional media content that seeks to undermine trust in the integrity of the election and divide Americans."

here is the red flag:

"The are from Haiti, they got there 6 months ago and have there citizenship"<-----it takes a lot longer than that to get your citizenship

if you get a chance to watch the whole vid, ck out how many id's they have also.....
