As a student of history, I just wanted to offer some perspective today...
Columbus did not discover America. He found the Bahamas in terms of popular Western thinking. He enlightened an ignorant Europe as to the presence of lands West of the Atlantic Ocean. ...But he did not discover it.
America was already discovered and inhabited by the native peoples that crossed the land bridge between present-day Russia and Alaska, spreading from there to South America in as little as 15,000 years.
There, people had their own customs, beliefs, religions, history, language, and traditions. They were not animals living on some untouched land.
The entire evolutionary history of humanity diverged and then came together once again when East met West. Columbus met his brothers and sisters from antiquity; he stood with them face to face and ignored all that binds us, instead focusing on the superficial traits that historically divide and destroy us for short-lived personal enrichment.
It's a lesson we have yet to learn as a people, as a species: that we are all the same. We all love, hurt, feel fear and joy, value our families, a good conversation...we all seek safety and security, mutual respect and patience, food, shelter, and warmth.
If we ignore this lesson and continue to repeat our past mistakes, we are doomed. We owe it to our children, so that they might have the same chance at a good life we had, to learn this lesson, and apply it's teachings in all we do.
