BJ's 38 degree NorCal backyard grow-The trials and tribulations of a moron

My mom's bout 48 so she was in her prime through the cocaine 80s. lol

Not really though, she's a healthy fit chick so she might be in her prime now! /mama'sboy
Oh, yes!! I remember a day or two from the 80's!! Your mom and I are close to the same age; I'm only a little older :) And any woman is in her prime when she feels like being in her prime whether she's 17 or 77 :-D We're special that way LOL

Well, well, well :) Where's everybody? Probably busier than a one-legged man in an ass-kicking contest, I imagine :-D Like me!

I've been battling deer for a few days. I've had them over the fence and in the yard three times in the last week/10 days, which gives them access to the Smurfs and the results have not been good. They really don't like the taste of green, growing marijuana but they keep checking to see if anything has changed. And they've practically stripped the eggplant, of all things. They are voracious!! I have enough plants that, over all, they probably haven't done much damage but it's pretty ugly to look at. AND THEY KEEP COMING BACK!! So, been rigging up ways to keep them out of the yard. They've been going in over the tops of the gates, which are lower than the fence, and that's not an easy place to block them out. I think I've got it covered now--no fresh damage in a couple of days--but them boogers are tricky suckers so I keep running out to check at all hours of the day and night. I didn't have this kind of trouble with deer last year--they only came by once and never touched the plants again.

I'm also having some minor bug damage--a chewed leaf here, a suspicious-looking beetle there--but I'm leery of bug spray when they're in bloom. Seems it would accumulate on the flowers and be caught inside the bud as it grows. I have located several spiders and a frog living among the Smurfs so I think I'll leave it to them for a while yet. My Mantis has moved on, apparently. I haven't seen her/it in a few weeks, nor have I seen any baby Mantises. Thought about buying some Lady Bugs to let loose in there. I found some at a garden center at $8 for 1500 of them. What do y'all think?

The Smurfs are looking healthy and happy and are in full bloom now. I took some pics to post but, when I reviewed them, I learned that I don't do good work when it comes to close-ups :-D I'll see if I can get more today. I've been giving them lots of Foxfarm Big Bloom and they seem to like it. No one's really stacking yet but they're covered with hairy little baby buds and smell fantastic :)

My clones are also coming along well. Everyone but the 1st Blue Kush and both of the Blue City Diesels are growing so fast that I have to adjust the lights and rotate the babies every day. BK seems to have gotten her act together, finally, and has taken off, though. A couple of the babies are big enough I can cut more clones from them if I wish. I'm thinking about it but I'm not set up for vegging and flowering at the same time for differently aged plants. Gloing to have to think on this, especially since I still have the second clone cuttings trying to recover from me inadvertently getting them sunburned a week into rooting when I cleared everyone out to re-arrange my grow area. I think I killed 4 of them. Oh well. I cut a 3rd Trainwreck just because there was a stem I accidentally snapped over when I was doing bug inspection on the Smurfs a few days ago. The ones from the 2nd cutting that take are going to do well, I believe, but I've really retarded their growth with the sunburn.

I've been checking some of the indoor grow threads and it seems 5 of the first clones I rooted last month are big enough to flower: they have at least 4 sturdy leaf nodes each. A couple of them have really good side branches for cloning :-D And, if I pay attention, I can harvest them around the middle or end of November once I get them on a flowering light cycle. But, I can't separate the vegging clones from the ready-to-flower clones right now. If the second set of clones recovers well, then I'll take them to The Greenery to give away so I can flower the first set. The Greenery said they'd take anything healthy and bug-free that I can provide; plus, they'll take all of the left-over cooking bud I've kept from last year. I don't like the taste :( Got an appointment for all of this on the 21st of September. That's a long time to keep them vegging so I may have to come up with something else between now and then. Meanwhile, I guess I'll fim and shape them as much as I can to keep them under control. They are growing like crazy!!

I've talked to the folks at The Greenery and done some on-line research and have decided that I'll not grow Blue City Diesel again. Remember I had all that weird yellowing earlier this summer? And they wilt if they get the slightest bit dried out or hot--those 95 degree days we had were rough on them. I was also told by one person they can be slow to finish--can't find any other information on that right now. The 1st BCD is still in it's rooting Solo cup and I killed the 2nd with sunburn. So, too picky for me. The Greenery told me it might be the strain of Blueberry used for crossing with New York City Diesel as some strains of Blue can be picky. BCD would have to be the most fantastic smoke ever for me to try growing it again.

BigJon, get us caught up on what you're doing!!

Happy Growing, all!

My praying mantises ditched me too lol.
Ladybugs are good for battling spider mites and aphids.
If I were you I would find out what beetles are eating your plants and buy a BT that works to kill them. They have lots of different strains of BT for different insects/bugs.

Thank you, FF! I know Ladybugs usually eat only soft-bodied pests like the aphids and I don't seem to have any problems with them or spider mites or anything else like that. The beetles are tiny little black things; at first, I thought they might be grasshopper poo since I had some of those. Then, I scraped one off and looked at it and saw tiny little legs wiggling around :-D I'm getting minor leaf damage; little holes here and there, an ocassional leaf finger that that gets eaten halfway through, etc. None of them seem to like the flowers themselves as I haven't found any kind of bug on the blossoms/baby buds. I'm still thinking about buying Ladybugs just to boost the wild population. I rarely see Ladybugs where I live; I can only remember seeing a couple this summer.

But, what's BT? Don't forget I'm new at this :)

I'm getting very impatient and have to work to not go to the garden 47 times a day to stare at the Smurfs :-D I'm also getting a little anxious as the weather made an abrupt change about a week ago. Here on the north side of my hill, it's only getting up into the mid-70's during the day and down as low as 40 (like today) in the morning. There's no way I'm going to be able to protect the Smurfs from an early frost. Having to wait another 4 weeks, probably longer (judging by the size of the buds), is going to be hard. Has anyone ever had their crop freeze or frost? They've lost a lot of sun, too, which is one of the reasons I'm starting to get anxious about them finishing. To me, they look like they've got quite a way to go.

The 1st batch of clones are probably big enough to send into flowering but I still have little clones, too. I don't have the space or money for materials to set my grow room up for vegging babies while flowering big ones in the same space. The second set of clones are NOT doing well. If they don't shape up real soon, I'm not going to take them to Greenery on my appointment date. It's embarassing. Live and learn! :-D

Here's a couple of pics to show where the Smurfs are at. The one I'm in is just to show their height--I'm 5'8". Big ol' granny, ain't I? Do you see my little security guards keeping the vicious wild turkeys away? :-D
And the one pic is to show some of the damage the deer did when they kept getting into the yard. Can you see the 'hole' through the canopy? And this is just one of the places they got to. They particularly thought the White Widow should be tasty and kept hitting her but her position in the garden makes it harder to take pics :) And then a pic to show the bud development. I was going to post a pic of my clones, too, but I don't have any current ones. I'll take some pics in the next few days and post them. It's much easier to find the pics I want now that I finally got the correct date and time set on my camera!!

OK, I'm out of here. Time to go stare at the Smurfs for a while. It'll only be the 12th time so far today :-D Happy growing, all!

Lol I gave it to her as a joke and it's a beaut.

xub, I never had any plants live that long. But I'm gonna throw out as many October clones after harvest. Maybe I'll have a chance to hang some lights on em.
Awhile back, an aquaintance of mine gave his mom a brownie for her birthday. She kicked his ass out!!!! He is back now, but on mad eggshells!

Hee-hee! Getting closer to Harvest!!

Blue Kush Blue City Diesel Blue Haze Green Crack White Widow Train Wreck Blue Widow The Unknown

I think the Smurfs are ripening up fast but I have no idea how far out I am from harvest :-D Some of these pics could be a little sharper. At any rate, just some bud picks from each strain I have in my garden.

Hee-hee! Harvest has started !!

100_2996.jpg

And here's what's still left in the garden :-D

100_3000.jpg

We had already done a little shaping up underneath about 10 days ago and dried those little buds. I gotta tell ya, my Blue Haze and my Green Crack are absolutely killer!!

The little bit that we've tested from the shape-up tells me I got a great garden this year. The buds are looser than they should be for commercial purposes; I just don't get enough sun on the north side of my hill. But for personal use, and give-aways, I'm extremely proud of what I accomplished this year.

Let's see, other updates: I gave all of my clones to The Greenery. They were very happy to get them and I got some REAL goodies in trade (my choice) as opposed to a cash reimbursement. I was told they were very healthy and later learned that all 14 them were gone to other growers within 3 days. Pretty good, huh?

So, BigJon, get on here and take over your thread again!! How is your garden? I've learned a lot on this thread and have to say that the people on RIU are great!! So willing to share and pass on their knowledge, even to giving away "secrets" to us newbies.

Happy Harvest everyone!

I have to add my Blue Kush to the killer weed in my garden. She's very dangerous!! It's a good thing, I guess, that she was very small; short and bushy with fat dark green leaves. I was disappointed in how little we got off her; she was one of three strains that finished (along with Blue Haze and Trainwreck) so we took down the whole plant. Nice fat buds but not very many of them. Sun problems again, probably. Plus being surrounded by tall, lanky Sativas. :-D I'll plan better for next year's garden. BUT!! A couple of hits and you can't move. The Blue Kush I have seems to be one of those pure or almost pure Indicas that makes it important for you to have the fridge within arm's length of your couch--you're not going to be able to move for a while. But, then again, why would you want to? My partner said it reminds him of what they used to call "Polio Weed" back in the early 70's. It's like being encased in honey while floating about a 1/4 inch above whatever surface you're relaxing on :-D BK has been relegated to night-time only! And, of course, that means she's wonderful for the back pain and spasms I sometimes get from an old on-the-job herniated-disc injury. I slept like a baby for 7 solid hours last night and didn't have to take my Trazadon to do it. I'm definitely going to try a couple more of her next year.

Blue City Diesel is nothing to write home about. It's not bad at all, just ordinary. She was so picky to grow that I won't try her again. Trainwreck, White Widow, Blue Widow and The Unknown seem to be above average so I'm very happy with them. And then, of course, my star-performers are Blue Haze (the Blueberry X Haze similar to Blue Dream), Green Crack and Blue Kush. As you can tell from the strain names, we lean pretty heavily towards Sativas--wonderful stuff for musicians like us! I'd love to have each strain tested to find out just exactly what I have but that might get a little spendy. Maybe I'll just test my 3 stars? None of them had as much usable bud as they could have, lack of sunlight again, I think, but with 12 plants I believe we're going to have more than enough for our needs over the coming year. I'm impatient for them to dry so I can get finish weights!

OK, out of here for now. Gonna go check some other threads and see how the experts are doing! Happy Harvest!
